Requirements
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Obtain Florida School Crossing Guard certification within two weeks of employment by completing approved observations and passing the state examination at the School Crossing Guard New Hire Training class.
  • Maintain yearly School Crossing Guard certification as required by the Florida Department of Transportation.
  • Maintain good physical condition, including sufficient sight, hearing, and ability to move and maneuver quickly to avoid danger from vehicles.
  • Effectively control a stop paddle and provide approaching road users with a clear view of its STOP message throughout the crossing movement.
  • Communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously.
  • Recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and warn and manage students in sufficient time to avoid injury.
  • Clearly speak English and inform children when to cross the street.
  • Observe children, traffic, crosswalk signals, and motorists; hear spoken words clearly.
  • Grasp and hold a stop sign overhead, walk into the street for visibility, stand for up to two and one-half hours, step up and down a six-inch curb, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and push a pedestrian button by hand.
  • Know when traffic signals are red, yellow, or green.
Responsibilities
  • Assist children crossing streets and highways to and from schools.
  • Maintain order by directing children to proper crossing areas and encouraging behavior conducive to safe travel.
  • Provide assistance to children as needed.
  • Monitor potentially hazardous situations or conditions affecting pedestrians or motorists and report them to the appropriate agency.
  • Maintain equipment in good appearance and repair.
  • Maintain high visibility to the public so motorists recognize the school crossing guard and avoid conflicts.
  • Work under the direct supervision of the JSO Safety & Prevention Unit and follow Florida Department of Transportation rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • React quickly and calmly in emergencies and execute duties firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, law enforcement officers, coworkers, school employees, and the general public.
