About the job

Requirements
  • A Master’s or Ph.D. degree in robotics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field, with at least three years of relevant industry experience, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Hands-on experience developing, integrating, and debugging real robots or mechatronic systems, including dual-arm mobile manipulators and humanoid robots operating in real-world environments.
  • Experience controlling real robot systems using ROS or ROS2, including full-stack system integration and deployment, or experience integrating and validating multiple robot software modules on physical robots.
  • Ability to understand interfaces across multiple components, including sensors, actuators, control systems, artificial intelligence modules, and user interfaces, and connect and validate them on real robots.
  • Strong programming skills in C++ and Python, including the ability to write production-quality code and perform system-level integration.
  • Ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Experience developing, integrating, and validating reliable robot systems in production or real-world operational environments.
Responsibilities
  • Integrate and validate ROS- or ROS2-based robot software, data acquisition interfaces, and modules running on humanoid and mobile robots.
  • Design and implement state management, mode switching, and system interfaces to ensure safe and stable real-robot operation in collaboration with teleoperation, control, navigation, and artificial intelligence/Vision-Language-Action modules.
  • Drive integration testing, real-robot evaluation, and issue isolation for robot software using simulation environments and physical robots.
  • Work with the Vision-Language-Action team to support software interfaces, state management, and connections to evaluation environments needed to run Vision-Language-Action models and learned policies on real robots.
  • Design robust robot software and hardware systems that operate reliably in real-world environments.
  • Diagnose, debug, and optimize performance across perception, control, and system integration layers.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate research prototypes into common platforms and applications so they operate reproducibly on real robots.
Desired Qualifications
  • Publications in leading international robotics conferences or journals.
  • Experience transitioning complex robot systems from prototypes to real-robot validation and operational deployment.
  • Experience with tactile sensing, contact-rich manipulation, teleoperation, and integration with control modules.
  • Experience with software integration related to robot data acquisition, real-robot logs, evaluation datasets, and multi-robot operations.
  • Experience using robot simulators such as Isaac Sim or MuJoCo for training and evaluation.
  • Experience connecting and evaluating simulations, learned policies, or Vision-Language-Action models with real robot systems.
  • Experience with continuous integration/continuous deployment pipelines and system validation methods for robotics applications.
  • Experience developing evaluation, visualization, diagnostic, or operational support tools for robotics applications.

About the company

AI Robot Association is best understood as an open research association working on foundation models for robotics. Researchers and engineers build datasets, training systems, evaluation methods, and embodied artificial-intelligence software. Its initiative brings together motion data, vision-language-action research, model development, and humanoid-robot experimentation. Roles may span machine learning, robotics, data engineering, simulation, infrastructure, research operations, and partnerships. The entity has a limited public footprint, so the profile stays close to its official research and recruiting materials.

What believers are saying

  • On 2026-08-03, AIRoA released 5,000 hours of robot motion data and a foundation model.
  • On 2026-08-04, it consolidated at a 3,500 m² Heiwajima facility, signaling execution.
  • Its 2026-02-10 ICRA workshop and RSJ 2026 talks widen partner demand and visibility.

What critics are saying

  • AIRoA depends on public programs like NEDO and GENIAC, exposing it to budget cuts.
  • Open-data coordination among members can stall, while DeepMind and NVIDIA race ahead.
  • If members stop contributing data, AIRoA’s ecosystem model loses scale and relevance quickly.

What makes AI Robot Association unique

  • AIRoA launched in 2024 as Japan’s open robot-data consortium, not a single vendor.
  • It combines academia, industry, and METI-NEDO-backed projects around robot foundation models.
  • Its Heiwajima hub centralizes R&D and corporate functions across Tokyo, Miraikan, and Kyoto.
