About the job

Requirements
  • Experience supporting founders or similarly demanding senior leaders, with specific examples of improving their effectiveness.
  • Strong prioritization judgment, including making routine decisions within established priorities and knowing when to escalate decisions to executives.
  • Ability to adapt support systems to different executive working styles and communicate tactfully about ineffective habits.
  • Ability to anticipate needs, prevent problems, close loops, communicate proactively when blocked, and manage up.
  • Ability to use AI to delegate repetitive work, synthesize information, prepare context, and automate lightweight workflows while verifying outputs and exercising judgment.
  • Ability to handle confidential personal and company information with discretion and communicate appropriately with different audiences.
  • Interest in learning the science, engineering, people, and strategy behind the organization; scientific or engineering expertise is not required.
  • Alignment with the organization's mission and interest in supporting ambitious scientific research.
Responsibilities
  • Manage complex calendars for three leaders, primarily the co-founders; proactively reconfigure, shorten, cancel, and sequence meetings; protect focus and preparation time; make routine prioritization decisions using company priorities and executive preferences; and surface business tradeoffs to executives.
  • Develop operating cadences suited to each executive, reduce contextless meetings and coordination failures, and take increasing ownership of inbox and communication triage as trust is established.
  • Prepare useful morning or evening digests where appropriate, link relevant pre-reads and context to upcoming meetings, flag missing preparation, and proactively schedule time for actions requiring executive attention.
  • Track how one-on-ones, team meetings, cross-functional forums, leadership meetings, planning cadences, and company-wide communications connect; identify where priorities, decisions, and ownership are being lost; surface issues requiring leadership alignment; and ensure decisions reach those responsible for execution.
  • Maintain an organized view of key scientific collaborators, clinical partners, funders, advisors, government and regulatory contacts, strategic partners, vendors, and prospective hires; track relationship history, commitments, and next steps; coordinate visits, dinners, demonstrations, scientific meetings, and partner reviews; and help leadership sequence outreach.
  • Own executive travel end-to-end according to each executive's preferences; manage company-related receipts and expenses; coordinate executive and team events and external partner visits; host important visitors; and handle confidential information discreetly.
  • Coordinate occasional personal logistics when doing so meaningfully protects an executive's work time; ongoing household errands, grocery shopping, family-related tasks, and similar personal tasks are out of scope.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience supporting scientific or engineering founders, particularly leaders with academic or research backgrounds.

About the company

Merge Labs develops brain–computer interfaces to connect human brains with computers. Its product focus is high-bandwidth neural implants that read neural signals and transmit data to AI systems and software, enabling bidirectional communication between brain and machine. The implants are designed to work with advances in AI and neural sensing hardware, using a system of implants, interfaces, and software to interpret brain activity and control devices or software. Compared with competitors, Merge Labs aligns with Sam Altman’s vision of human–machine convergence, leveraging OpenAI ventures connections and positioning itself as a Neuralink rival with an emphasis on higher data throughput and scalable AI-assisted interpretation. The company’s goal is to create seamless, high-bandwidth brain–computer communication that enhances human capabilities and enables new ways of interacting with technology.

What believers are saying

  • Butterfly's September 1, 2026 deal creates a commercial supply chain immediately.
  • OpenAI pledged scientific foundation models and frontier tools to accelerate Merge's R&D.
  • Ultrasound BCI leverages Butterfly's 71.4% gross margin platform and semiconductor manufacturing.

What critics are saying

  • A $252 million seed round funds research, not FDA-approved products or revenue.
  • Neuralink's implant-first progress and clinical visibility threaten Merge's noninvasive positioning.
  • OpenAI's insider support invites governance scrutiny if Merge misses milestones before 2027.

What makes Merge Labs unique

  • OpenAI invested in Merge Labs' $252 million seed round at an $850 million valuation.
  • Merge Labs uses ultrasound-on-chip from Butterfly Network, unlike Neuralink's invasive electrodes.
  • Sam Altman, OpenAI, and Forest Neurotech give Merge exceptional AI and neuroscience access.
