- The role requires performing clinical assessment, evaluation, tests, treatments, therapies, medical management, and other direct care for patients in the Pediatric Emergency Department.
- The role requires obtaining medical histories, performing physical assessments, ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests, writing discharge orders, and prescribing appropriate medications under delegated prescriptive authority.
- The role requires screening patients to determine the need for hospital admission and developing therapeutic relationships with patients.
- The role requires coordinating patient care among nurses, patients, families, physicians, and community resources.
- The role requires pursuing professional knowledge and skills, participating in quality assurance activities, and serving as a clinical skills resource for staff.
- The role may require teaching students and residents techniques and procedures specific to the clinical setting.
- The role requires practicing procedures according to the Advanced Practice Provider Delineation of Privileges.
- The role requires designing patient education programs that support informed healthcare and treatment decisions.

Responsibilities
- Provide direct comprehensive healthcare to pediatric patients in the Comer Children's Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department during nocturnal shifts.
- Work collaboratively within the Emergency Department care team to assess and manage lower-acuity patients in a Pediatric Fast Track treatment setting.
- Perform clinical assessment, evaluation, tests, treatments, therapies, medical management, and other direct patient care.
- Obtain medical histories, perform physical assessments, order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests, write discharge orders, and prescribe appropriate medications under delegated prescriptive authority.
- Screen patients to determine the need for hospital admission and develop therapeutic relationships with patients.
- Collaborate with and act as a liaison among nurses, patients, families, physicians, and community resources to coordinate patient care.
- Pursue required knowledge and skills for professional development, participate in unit quality assurance activities, and act as a clinical skills resource for staff on or off the unit.
- Teach students and residents techniques and procedures unique to the clinical setting when needed.
- Practice procedures according to the Advanced Practice Provider Delineation of Privileges.
- Design patient education programs containing information needed for informed healthcare and treatment decisions.
- Develop diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions to achieve the goals and outcomes of each patient's plan of care.
- Perform other related work as needed.
Desired Qualifications
- An advanced degree from an accredited school or college of nursing or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.
- Master's of Science in Nursing.
- Background working in a Pediatric Level 1 Trauma Emergency Room.
- Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Nurse licensure/registration.
- Certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurse's Credentialing Center or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
- Once licensed, apply for a mid-level practitioner controlled substance license and Drug Enforcement Administration number.
- Emergency Department experience as a Nurse Practitioner.
- Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program.
- Certification in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support and by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants and current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois licensure/registration.
- Emergency Department experience.
- Demonstrated clinical competency.
- Conduct physical examinations and health assessments.
- Work effectively under pressure.
- Use independent judgment.
- Strong communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate communication among various levels of practitioners.
- Ability to interview and obtain medical information.
