About the job

Requirements
  • 10–15 years of engineering experience, with a clear track record of pillar-level impact on production AI systems.
  • 4+ years of hands-on work with large language models in inference, GPU performance, evaluations, or post-training and reinforcement learning, in production or research.
  • Demonstrated ability to define multi-year technical strategy for complex, multi-team AI systems organizations.
  • World-class depth in production large language model inference, GPU performance, evaluations, and/or post-training and reinforcement learning infrastructure, with strong working knowledge across the rest.
  • Demonstrated ownership of the architecture of a large-scale production inference or training platform.
  • Proven ability to create architectural frameworks and engineering standards adopted across large engineering organizations.
  • Deep understanding of the hardware/software boundary for AI accelerators, including CUDA or ROCm, memory bandwidth and interconnect constraints, and distributed compute paradigms.
  • Strong history of growing technical leaders at Staff level and above and multiplying technical capability across teams.
  • External recognition in the AI systems community through research, open source, or industry contribution.
Responsibilities
  • Define and own the multi-year technical roadmap for the inference, evaluations, and post-training platform, and translate it into architecture that multiple teams can execute against.
  • Lead company-scale architectural initiatives in inference, evaluations, and post-training, including next-generation serving; disaggregated prefill/decode; key-value cache orchestration across GPU, host, and storage tiers; speculative decoding; multi-tenant scheduling; GPU kernel and model efficiency; custom kernels; FP8, NVFP4, and INT8/4 quantization; sparsity; distillation; mixture-of-experts serving; evaluation and benchmarking frameworks; and post-training and reinforcement learning infrastructure.
  • Establish engineering standards adopted across AI teams, including API design and compatibility guarantees, benchmarking and evaluation methodology, training stability norms, and performance testing practices.
  • Own the framework for measuring and making cost, latency, throughput, and model-quality trade-offs across the pillar.
  • Identify long-horizon systemic risks, including serving-engine and framework choices, accelerator support, and capability gaps, and resolve them before they block the organization.
  • Align AI engineering, research, product, and infrastructure leadership on multi-team technical strategy, and frame technical trade-offs in product and commercial terms.
  • Mentor and develop Staff and Senior AI Engineers, and grow the next generation of inference technical leaders.
  • Represent the company’s technical approach externally through open-source leadership in relied-upon frameworks, publications, conference talks, and partnerships with GPU vendors and AI labs.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience at a top-tier AI lab or major hyperscaler AI infrastructure team.
  • Maintainer or core contributor experience with a foundational inference, kernel, or reinforcement learning framework such as vLLM, SGLang, TensorRT-LLM, LMCache, FlashInfer, Triton, verl, OpenRLHF, TRL, DeepSpeed, or Megatron-LM.
  • Hands-on depth in reinforcement learning for large language models, including DPO/GRPO-style methods, reward modeling, multi-turn and tool-use reinforcement learning, and the interaction between inference and training infrastructure.
  • Experience defining developer API platforms adopted at scale by external developers.
  • Deep experience with control-plane/data-plane architecture and cell-based deployment patterns in large-scale inference infrastructure.
  • Published work in AI systems at MLSys, NeurIPS Systems Track, OSDI, EuroSys, SC, or equivalent.
  • Experience with hardware-software co-design, including custom accelerator kernels using CUDA or Triton, compiler-level optimization, and AI hardware roadmap engagement.
  • Experience defining pricing, service-level objectives, and capacity models for a commercial inference product.

Microsoft exits Nscale's UK data centre as grid delays push power to the 2030s

Microsoft has pulled out of a planned AI data centre in Loughton, Essex, that British cloud provider Nscale was building for it, Reuters reported on October 18, citing the Telegraph. Microsoft is one of Nscale's two largest customers and declined to comment. The reason for the withdrawal was not specified. Power looks like the problem. Grid officials reportedly told Nscale they did not expect to supply electricity until the 2030s. Nscale says it remains committed to the site and is exploring other power sources. The site was to house about 23,000 Nvidia chips, roughly 11.5% of a 200,000-chip programme. Microsoft's June-quarter cash capital expenditure was $35.80 billion, more than double a year earlier. The exit hurts Nscale more: its IPO filing lists Microsoft agreements worth up to $43.8 billion.
