Requirements
- A nurse practitioner must be a graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing.
- A nurse practitioner must hold national certification from one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certification Centers.
- A nurse practitioner must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- A nurse practitioner must hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
- A physician assistant must hold a Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant, as applicable.
- A physician assistant must graduate from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved physician assistant training program.
- A physician assistant must hold certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- A physician assistant must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- A physician assistant must hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
- Candidates must demonstrate proficiency with computers.
- Candidates must have strong communication skills.
- The position requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning patients, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for hospitalized patients and their families during the inpatient phase of hospitalization and plan disposition for immediate post-discharge ambulatory care.
- Complete daily rounds and consultations and perform pre-procedure evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations, in collaboration with hospitalist faculty or by following established clinical guidelines and protocols, when appropriate.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings in patient evaluations.
- Perform succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating appropriate services and tests required for outpatient follow-up appointments.
- Develop a comprehensive individualized plan of care for hospitalized patients, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members as necessary.
- Provide care for patients across the age continuum within the scope of educational experience and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex hospitalized patient care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in the clinic or hospital setting.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate general medicine patients and coordinate follow-up, procedures, and tests in the ambulatory setting.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures.
- Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making by identifying, evaluating, and managing individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
- Promote an environment that supports learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Update the professional knowledge base throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for hospitalized patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate in the area of expertise.
- Document each patient's plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the medical record according to approved hospital and West Virginia University Medicine policies and documentation compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in the cardiology practice that positively impact patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate creative problem solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role of inpatient and ambulatory care delivery.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret cardiology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist hospitalist faculty, administrators, and directors with collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Acute care or hospitalist experience is preferred.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
- Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification is preferred, although Family Nurse Practitioners will be considered.
- Master's-level education as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is preferred.
