Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
  • A current Texas Registered Nurse license, Basic Life Support certification, and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification.
  • Proficiency in the nursing process when caring for clients with chronic conditions, rehabilitation needs, wound care needs, and dementia.
  • Ability to participate in interdisciplinary care meetings and provide patient and family teaching.
  • Ability to apply the nursing process at the unit, team, or work-group level to improve care.
  • Ability to identify potential client problems and take appropriate nursing measures, including addressing ethical issues.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-leader or leadership role and use team approaches to identify, analyze, and resolve problems.
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate client care consistent with accrediting and regulatory bodies, the Veterans Administration, and Nursing Service mission, philosophy, goals, and standards.
  • Ability to work effectively with clients, families or significant others, professional and supportive personnel, and members of other services.
  • Ability to avert or manage situations in a safe and therapeutic manner.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and tact when dealing with patients, families, and staff.
  • Proficiency in keyboarding and basic computer operations.
  • Physical capability to initiate crisis-intervention measures and the knowledge and ability to provide nursing care in an emergency.
  • Understanding and proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word, as well as Adobe Acrobat, data analytics tools, and Visio.
Responsibilities
  • Provide Registered Nurse services in support of the Veterans Integrated Services Network 17 engagement at the Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System in Harlingen, Texas.
  • Provide care for clients with chronic conditions, rehabilitation needs, wound care needs, and dementia.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary care meetings and provide patient and family teaching.
  • Apply the nursing process to improve care at the unit, team, or work-group level.
  • Identify client problems and intervene using appropriate nursing measures, including addressing ethical issues.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate client care in accordance with applicable standards and the Veterans Administration and Nursing Service mission.
  • Work with clients, families or significant others, professional and supportive personnel, and members of other services.
  • Avert or manage client situations safely and therapeutically.
  • Initiate crisis-intervention measures and provide nursing care during emergencies.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.
