HJAHC delivers primary care, dental, behavioral health, women's health, HIV/Hepatitis C treatment, on-site pharmacy, nutrition services, and social supports across multiple Trenton locations as a Federally Qualified Health Center. It uses a patient-centered, integrated care model funded by Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, and federal grants, with a sliding fee scale to keep care affordable for uninsured or underinsured patients. It stands out as Trenton's largest non-hospital ambulatory care provider and offers residency programs for nurse practitioners and pharmacists, uniting many services under one roof for a culturally diverse community. Its goal is to expand access to high-quality care, reduce financial and social barriers, and advance health equity in the community.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • November 2025 Direct Relief and Sanofi gave HJAHC $200,000 for respiratory-health programs.
  • April 2025 HRSA grant funded evening and Saturday hours, improving patient throughput.
  • 2026 social posts show active community outreach, helping retention, referrals, and payer mix.

What critics are saying

  • Grant dependence is acute; February 2025 HRSA funding underwrites expanded evening and Saturday hours.
  • If federal grants tighten after 2026, extended access and staffing shrink quickly.
  • Trenton competitors like hospital outpatient clinics can outspend HJAHC on specialists, technology, and retention.

What makes Henry J Austin Health Center unique

  • Trenton's largest non-hospital ambulatory provider, with six neighborhood locations and on-site pharmacy.
  • FTCA-deemed status shields clinicians from direct malpractice suits, reducing personal liability risk.
  • Deep community model spans primary care, dental, behavioral health, OB/GYN, HIV, and Hepatitis C.
