Responsibilities
- Provide support care under the direction of the Registered Nurse, focusing on a positive patient experience and assisting with activities of daily living, ambulation, vital signs, and comfort measures.
- Perform approved advanced technical skills as needed, which may include phlebotomy, simple treatments, dressing changes, oral suctioning, discontinuing Foley catheters, EKGs, and removal of IVs.
- Perform clerical functions, including retrieving data, maintaining unit supplies, and transporting supplies, patient medications, and equipment.
- Support patients’ healing and wellness by addressing needs and following the assigned plan of care, engaging patients and families in the treatment plan, and contributing to care in collaboration with the health care team.
- Implement safety interventions, protect patient rights and dignity, maintain confidentiality under HIPAA and privacy procedures, and participate in hourly patient rounding.
- Answer telephone calls and call lights promptly, notify appropriate individuals of follow-up needs, resolve concerns or escalate them to the charge nurse, and offer assistance and comfort measures to patients and families.
- Provide hygiene, nutrition, elimination, and physical comfort care; assist the RN and other health care team members with care delivery and direct patient admission; monitor data entry for key patient-safety information; participate in charge reconciliation; and perform audits as requested.
- Support health care team initiatives, participate in unit performance-improvement initiatives, support professional nursing practice through shared leadership, evidence-based practice, and ethical accountability, and practice accountability.
- Communicate effectively with patients, staff, physicians, family, and visitors using AIDET; use safety communication techniques such as ARRC and the chain of command; communicate assignment completion and patient-care concerns or emergencies to the RN or charge nurse in real time.
- Document completed patient care in the electronic medical record, update patient whiteboards, and maintain equipment such as blood pressure machines and glucometers; sequester, tag, and report malfunctioning devices.
- Maintain a safe care environment through proper hand hygiene, clean and uncluttered rooms and unit areas, appropriate personal protective equipment and infection-control practices, universal-precaution reinforcement, and proper body mechanics and use of patient-safe-handling and assistive devices.
- Perform environment-of-care rounds and comply with Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Desired Qualifications
- Graduation from a state-approved Certified Nursing Assistant or Patient Care Technician program is preferred upon hire.
