About the job

Requirements
  • An advanced degree in engineering, mathematics, computer science, operations research, or another quantitative field is required.
  • Significant experience leading applied artificial intelligence, decision intelligence, optimisation, or analytical platform work in complex operational domains is required.
  • Strong understanding of optimisation and modelling principles and how algorithms support real planning problems is required.
  • Experience improving planning, routing, scheduling, or network optimisation through heuristics, analytics, or artificial-intelligence-based enhancements is required.
  • Strong Python skills and the ability to work closely with software and data engineering teams are required.
  • Ability to lead experimentation, validate model performance, and convert technical ideas into business-relevant capabilities is required.
  • Ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders is required.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the optimisation intelligence agenda across network design, routing, vessel deployment, cargo flow, and operational decisioning.
  • Set direction for defining problem structures, formulating optimisation approaches, designing heuristics, and identifying where artificial intelligence can improve search, modelling quality, and decision outcomes.
  • Guide specialists building optimisation models, analytical components, and artificial intelligence capabilities, ensuring their work fits into a coherent artificial intelligence plus operations research architecture.
  • Drive structured experimentation to compare alternative methods, validate model behaviour, and improve performance, robustness, and scalability.
  • Define how artificial intelligence systems interact with solver layers, heuristics, and optimisation services rather than treating artificial intelligence as a separate layer.
  • Lead the use of agentic artificial intelligence where it adds value to reasoning, orchestration, exception handling, and human-in-the-loop decision support.
  • Shape the innovation roadmap by identifying promising methods and accelerating them into pilots and scaled capabilities.
  • Raise standards across modelling practice, technical quality, experimentation discipline, and architectural judgment.
  • Communicate assumptions, trade-offs, and limitations clearly to senior stakeholders and decision-makers.
  • Set technical direction for artificial-intelligence-augmented optimisation and agentic decision systems across network design and operational execution.
  • Determine how planning problems are framed and where artificial intelligence can improve search, candidate generation, structural recommendations, and decision quality.
  • Guide the interface between artificial intelligence systems, heuristics, solver layers, optimisation services, and enterprise workflows.
  • Establish patterns for when artificial intelligence should recommend, act autonomously, or escalate to humans.
  • Set the quality bar for experimentation, evaluation, and translating new methods into measurable value for planners and decision-makers.
  • Develop reusable intelligence patterns that scale across Control Tower and Network Design use cases.
  • Create the technical direction, decision framework, and quality standards for a broader team of optimisation, analytics, and artificial intelligence specialists.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in logistics, supply chain, shipping, transportation, or another optimisation-heavy industry is preferred.
  • Exposure to large-scale network design, routing, fleet planning, cargo flow optimisation, or similar decision systems is preferred.
  • Experience using artificial intelligence or machine learning to improve optimisation performance, such as learning-augmented algorithms, surrogate models, search guidance, or reinforcement learning, is preferred.
  • Experience across research, prototyping, and productionisation of optimisation methods is preferred.

What believers are saying

  • Maersk raised 2026 EBIT guidance to USD 4.5-6.5 billion in August 2026.
  • Second-quarter 2026 revenue reached USD 15.8 billion, driven by Far East demand and higher spot rates.
  • Altana, PUMA, and new Germany warehousing deals deepen sticky logistics revenue beyond Ocean shipping.

What critics are saying

  • Maersk cut 1,000 corporate jobs in February 2026, signaling persistent overhead pressure.
  • Strait of Hormuz disruptions forced emergency freight surcharges across Gulf lanes in March 2026.
  • Ocean remains exposed to overcapacity; a 2027 rate reset crushes margins and cash generation.

What makes Maersk unique

  • Gemini Cooperation topped 90% schedule performance across East-West routes in 2026.
  • Maersk integrates ocean, terminals, warehousing, and customs software into one customer workflow.
  • Its 130-country footprint gives shippers single-provider control from factory gate to last mile.

Maersk to fit hi-tech sail on container ship to cut fuel costs and emissions

Maersk is installing a high-tech sail on one of its container ships to reduce fuel costs and emissions. The Danish shipping giant has commissioned London-based Anemoi to fit a 35-metre rotor sail on the Maersk Labrea, a 100,000-tonne vessel. The spinning sail, which has a five-metre spread, will allow the ship to maintain speed whilst using less fuel or to increase velocity and reduce journey times. This marks the first time a modern sail has been fitted to a container ship. Anemoi has previously installed its technology on 28 vessels, including bulk carriers and oil tankers. The 400,000-tonne ore carrier Sohar Max saw a 6% drop in fuel consumption after being fitted with five rotor sails. Trials will begin next year on transatlantic routes.

Maersk flags port infrastructure buckling as freight rates rise 22% on strong Asia demand

Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd reported strong second-quarter results driven by resilient demand and rising freight rates, but both carriers warned that port infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with cargo volumes. Maersk's revenue jumped 20 percent year-over-year to $15.8 billion, with freight rates increasing 22 percent to $2,746 per 40-foot container. CEO Vincent Clerc said infrastructure is "stretched to the maximum" and called landside operations "underinvested". Hapag-Lloyd's revenue rose 11 percent to $5.8 billion, with average freight rates climbing 9 percent to $1,475 per TEU. Both carriers raised their full-year earnings guidance, with Maersk now expecting EBIT of $4.5 billion to $6.5 billion. Volume increased 4.1 percent at Maersk and 3.5 percent at Hapag-Lloyd, whilst bottlenecks shift from ships to ports and terminals.

Maersk doubles operating profit to $1.6B as infrastructure bottlenecks boost rates

A.P. Moller-Maersk reported strong second-quarter results and raised its full-year guidance for the second time this year. Revenue rose 20% year on year to $15.8 billion, whilst operating profit almost doubled to approximately $1.6 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of roughly $700 million. The company now expects full-year underlying EBIT of $4.5 billion to $6.5 billion, up from its previous $2 billion to $4 billion range. Shares rose as much as 9%. CEO Vincent Clerc said the primary challenge is no longer ship capacity but ports, rail, trucks and inland infrastructure struggling to move containers. He noted that infrastructure has been underinvested in since the financial crisis, resulting in congestion across multiple regions pushing up spot rates.

Maersk raises 2026 outlook as Q2 EBITDA hits $3B on strong Far East exports

A.P. Moller-Maersk has raised its full-year earnings outlook after reporting strong second-quarter results. Revenue climbed 20% year-on-year to $15.8 billion, whilst EBITDA reached $3.0 billion. The Copenhagen-based shipping company attributed the performance to robust Far East export demand, higher spot rates, and congestion across key trade lanes. Ocean segment revenue increased 23%, with loaded volumes rising 4.1% and average freight rates up 22%. Disruption through the Strait of Hormuz prompted cargo rerouting through alternative ports. Import demand was particularly strong in Africa, North America, and Latin America, whilst Chinese exports remained a principal source of volume growth. Maersk now expects full-year global container-market volume growth of approximately 4%.
