Requirements
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • At least 2 years of lifeguarding and/or swim instruction experience with demonstrated leadership abilities are required.
  • Current lifeguard and swim instructor certification from a recognized organization, such as the Red Cross or YMCA, is required.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications are required.
  • Current Administering Emergency Oxygen Certification is required.
  • Applicants must be able to obtain YSLI-T and/or LGI certification within the first 90 days or by the first training offered.
  • Applicants must be able to interact effectively with staff and participants of all ages.
  • Applicants must understand aquatic safety practices and procedures, including rescue techniques and emergency response protocols.
  • Applicants must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, according to program schedules.
  • Applicants must support the YMCA mission and values, including youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
  • Applicants must comply with abuse prevention policies, maintain appropriate boundaries, complete required training, report suspicious or inappropriate behavior, and comply with mandated reporting requirements.
  • Applicants must pass a background check as a condition of employment.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States, as employment verification is conducted through the Federal E-Verify system.
Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and feedback to lifeguards and swim instructors while modeling professionalism, safety, and customer service.
  • Assist with training and developing lifeguards and swim instructors so staff are proficient in their roles and prepared to handle emergencies.
  • Teach lifeguard and swim lesson classes and assist with in-service training.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact on the pool deck, maintain a constant operational presence, address concerns, and enforce safety protocols.
  • Monitor pool activities for compliance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Remain ready to teach lessons or perform lifeguarding duties during assigned shifts.
  • Respond to aquatic emergencies and coordinate with emergency services when necessary.
  • Conduct regular drills and training exercises to prepare staff for emergencies.
  • Interact with members and guests regarding aquatic programs and facilities and address their questions or concerns.
  • Assist with emergency scheduling, staff feedback and quick checks, and program-planning feedback.
  • Collaborate with management to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Identify and mitigate aquatic safety hazards to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Maintain accurate incident reports and documentation in accordance with YMCA policies.
  • Ensure staff are properly screened, trained, supervised, and held accountable to the organization's abuse risk-management standards.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations, including differences in language, culture, race, physical ability, and sexual orientation, is preferred.
  • Ability to speak a language in addition to English may be helpful.
