  • Experience in the recruitment and retention of diverse faculty and staff, and faculty development.
  • Proven track record with quality improvement and clinical operations.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate clinical practice protocols with clinical staff, facilitate the transition of evidence-based practices, drive a culture of patient safety, recommend health care services in response to innovations and trends, and establish standards of medical care consistent with the hospital’s philosophy and goals.
  • Implement the Quality Improvement Plan to assure safe and effective patient care, and oversee medical staff peer review, including ongoing professional practice evaluations and focused practice evaluations.
  • Integrate, monitor, and evaluate quality assurance, disease management, and utilization review activities; develop standards to improve clinical and administrative quality outcomes, ensure high standards of treatment and care, and ensure compliance with licensing and accrediting bodies; provide leadership and vision for clinical guidelines and care pathways.
  • Direct Quality Improvement activities, prepare Quality Improvement Committee meeting agendas, and serve as Committee Chairperson; initiate audits and studies to demonstrate compliance with JCAHO and other regulatory agency requirements; maintain vital records and statistics.
  • Serve on the senior management team and assist in strategic development of initiatives and programs; participate in the annual operating and capital budget process, providing input on medical affairs, clinical quality, and program and facility development budgets.
  • Lead physician engagement strategies, support community physicians in recruitment, and promote programs that enhance physician satisfaction; receive and review medical staff admission applications, prepare preliminary materials and recommendations for the Credentials Committee, recommend improvements to the review process, attend appeal hearings, and assist with review of physician contracts, compensation, and stipends.
  • Encourage interdepartmental cooperation and coordination of medically oriented services; coordinate with Departmental Chairs and investigate and resolve problems and conflicts between medical staff and Administration or other departments; meet with patients or family members to discuss and resolve complaints related to hospital medical services.
  • Ensure medical staff development plans and programs are implemented and maintained; support Medical Staff Officers, Chiefs, and Committee Chairs in providing leadership; support team and individual growth among leaders; support medical staff self-governance and accountability to the Hospital Board for quality and safety; ensure compliance with bylaws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and behavior standards.
  • Establish continuing medical education and other relevant programs and encourage medical staff attendance; establish and maintain systems recording data related to medical credentialing, physician licensure, educational meeting attendance, and medical staff participation.
  • Support and champion the organization’s infection control program, quality initiatives, and clinical integration.
  • Participate in development of clinical information systems and electronic medical records to enable clinical data utilization and feedback to physicians on practice patterns and performance.
  • Attend relevant medical staff, administrative team, and board meetings as appropriate; participate in hospital and professional meetings, committees, and conferences as needed.
  • During emergencies, disasters, or catastrophic events, perform assigned disaster service activities that promote public health and safety.
  • Oversee staff managing the Epidemiology Program, Tumor Registry, Quality Improvement program, and Diagnostic Imaging; coordinate Utilization Review activities as they affect quality of patient care; supervise, motivate, and direct assigned staff and conduct routine performance evaluations.
  • Maintain professional expertise in medical care and health service delivery, and stay familiar with regulatory requirements, procedural changes, and revisions in professional standards.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Five to seven years of experience in an academic setting and medical staff administrative leadership is preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership in an acute care hospital as a CMO, Associate Chief Medical Officer, Medical Director, or another relevant position is preferred.
  • An MBA, MHA, related degree, or credential in medical management is desirable.
  • Experience with Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) is desirable.

Care New England cuts 30+ leadership jobs to close $20M budget gap

Care New England is cutting more than 30 leadership and non-clinical positions to address a projected $20 million budget deficit for fiscal year 2026. The announcement comes as hospitals nationwide face financial pressures from federal Medicaid funding changes and policy overhauls. CEO Dr Michael Wagner cited uncompetitive state reimbursement rates compared with neighbouring states as factors hindering staff recruitment and retention. The health system, Rhode Island's second-largest hospital operator, employs over 8,000 people across Butler, Kent and Women & Infants hospitals. Care New England has faced ongoing financial challenges, exacerbated during the pandemic. A proposed 2022 merger with competitor Lifespan was blocked by regulators on anti-trust grounds. The company spent more than $10.8 million on executive compensation in fiscal 2024.
