Requirements
  • The candidate must be a graduate of an approved school of practical nursing and have completed an approved pharmacology course.
  • The candidate must pass the medication administration and math test during orientation and whenever updates are required.
  • Previous experience is recommended, preferably in pediatrics.
  • The candidate must hold current practical nurse licensure in the State of Illinois.
  • The candidate must work effectively under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • The candidate must hold CPR certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Effective July 1, 2026, new hires must obtain RQI Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire or before providing direct patient care and maintain certification quarterly.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe direct care to acute and chronically ill pediatric patients from infancy through adolescence, including some young adults.
  • Observe patients for signs and symptoms and implement care based on identified patient and family needs and the plan of care.
  • Use knowledge of growth and development when delivering patient care.
  • Teach patients and families according to plans devised by the professional nurse and nurse leader.
  • Administer medications under Registered Nurse supervision and maintain fluids initiated by a Registered Nurse.
  • Admit patients and assist with the nursing process under Registered Nurse supervision.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment for pediatric patients.
  • Report patient condition and other relevant information to the appropriate members of the health care team.
  • Document significant information in electronic medical records.
  • Evaluate the care plan and patient response with the primary team and modify the plan based on patient and family needs.
  • Participate in care team conferences.
  • Follow hospital policies, procedures, and the Illinois Nurse Practice Act while maintaining a safe patient care environment.
  • Demonstrate unit-specific skills and competencies, including tracheostomy care.
  • Use patient care equipment, remove malfunctioning equipment from service, and report malfunctions immediately.
  • Apply infection-control and safety precautions, including isolation and intravenous-line care.
  • Maintain knowledge of Joint Commission, Illinois Department of Public Health, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in continuous preparation for regulatory surveys.
  • Incorporate quality-improvement project information into practice and complete and route Safety Learning Notifications appropriately.
  • Attend required educational sessions, maintain professional competencies, and perform other duties within the scope of practice.
