About the job

Requirements
  • Hold a current Registered Nurse license issued by the state where services will be provided, or a current multistate Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Alternatively, hold a current temporary or Graduate RN permit as required by the state board where services will be provided. In Maryland, document recent graduation from nursing school and obtain a permanent RN license within 90 days of graduation; Ohio nurses must be currently licensed; Pennsylvania nurses must hold a current Pennsylvania Registered Nurse Temporary Permit and obtain a permanent license before it expires; West Virginia nurses must hold a current West Virginia Registered Nurse Graduate Permit and obtain a permanent license before it expires. Temporary permits are valid only in the state of issuance and are not multistate licenses.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Demonstrate novice-level clinical knowledge and skills necessary to provide care relevant to patients and apply growth and development principles across the lifespan.
  • Assess and interpret patient data to identify age-specific patient needs.
  • Meet the physical demands of heavy/hard work, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying materials and equipment weighing 40 pounds or more.
  • Use lift equipment and other patient-handling aids as indicated by the patient profile and appropriate algorithms; manually lift patients only within safe patient-handling guidance, which recommends a 35-pound limit.
Responsibilities
  • Deliver professional nursing care to patients in an inpatient hospital setting using the nursing process and independent nursing judgment.
  • Assume responsibility, use appropriate authority, and accept accountability in delivering patient care.
  • Provide direct patient care during an assigned shift within the nursing process and scope of practice.
  • Make appropriate clinical decisions and use expert peers or management when applicable.
  • Initiate actions to correct, reduce, or prevent risks identified by patient-health data.
  • Provide coordinated, comprehensive patient care, including assessment, expected outcomes, nursing interventions, and evaluation, as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Negotiate patient-care tasks with patients and families within safe-practice guidelines; delegate tasks to assigned personnel and follow up on completion and patient response.
  • Use standards, resources, and patient-response evaluation effectively in care delivery, and follow standards of care and practice.
  • Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings; seek assistance or credible resources when unable to perform safely and independently.
  • Evaluate patient responses to performed and delegated tasks, including Patient Profile Assessment for safe patient handling and mobility.
  • Set and revise direct- and indirect-care priorities based on patient acuity and available resources, and update daily care plans to include appropriate safe-patient-handling algorithms.
  • Use established patient-care support systems, including documentation, communication, and information systems.
  • Support the development of others, engage in mentoring and networking, and help integrate staff and students into the healthcare team and unit mission, values, and vision.
  • Promote trusting relationships and open, honest communication at the unit level; exchange information relevant to patient assignments and interact with healthcare-team members to meet patient-care needs.
  • Participate in performance-improvement activities as appropriate.
  • Complete annual education required for specialty accreditation, when applicable, through computer-based learning, training, in-services, or competency validation.
Desired Qualifications
  • Hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
