Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Ranking, while three others received top-quartile recognition. The rankings cover seven cohorts of participating hospitals and reflect the 2026 Vizient Quality and Accountability Study. Froedtert West Bend Hospital placed 3 out of 280 participating organizations in the Community Medical Center Cohort. ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Appleton ranked 11 out of 225 in the Large, Specialized Complex Care Medical Centers Cohort, while ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah ranked 5 out of 225 in that same cohort. ThedaCare Hospitals ranked across cohorts. ThedaCare Medical Center-Wild Rose ranked 8 out of 172 participating organizations in the Critical Access Care Hospital Cohort. It assessed patient-care quality across six domains: safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient-centeredness and variation in care. Study measures Quality and Accountability. Vizient's study draws on measures from its Clinical Data Base, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey, and the CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network. The source announcement says Vizient performance is the primary measure Froedtert ThedaCare uses to drive quality and accountability. It describes the study as a way for hospitals and health systems to compare performance with peers and identify structures and processes associated with quality and safety. "We're pleased to earn these recognitions from Vizient, highlighting our quality metrics which provide measurement of the safe, high-quality care we provide for our patients and families," said Imran A. Andrabi, MD, FAAFM, president and chief executive officer of Froedtert ThedaCare. Andrabi also credited the expertise, compassion and dedication of team members, saying their commitment supports service to communities. Ian Schwartz, MD, chief clinical officer of Froedtert ThedaCare and senior associate dean for Quality at the Medical College of Wisconsin School of Medicine, called the recognitions evidence of system-wide work on patient care. Schwartz said the honors reflect efforts by physicians, clinicians and team members, and give patients confidence in access to high-quality care across the system. Vizient Chief Medical Officer David Levine said recognized hospitals showed what can result when clinical expertise, operational discipline and continuous improvement are embedded across an organization. Leadership and system context. The announcement places the rankings within a broader focus on health-system leadership and accountability. Grit Daily has also covered a health system leadership transition and an executive reorganization, while its report on university leadership accountability covers a separate institutional setting. Froedtert ThedaCare describes itself as an integrated healthcare system serving nearly half of Wisconsin's population. It reports 28,000+ team members, physicians and clinicians, 20 hospitals and more than 360 outpatient locations. The new ranking results give its facilities a defined performance comparison across the study's seven cohorts and six quality domains.

ThedaCare to host walk event supporting families affected by pregnancy and infant loss.

ThedaCare to host walk event supporting families affected by pregnancy and infant loss. ThedaCare will hold 'A Walk to Remember' in Appleton for families impacted by pregnancy or infant loss. The event includes a tree planting ceremony for remembrance and opportunities for community support. 2 days ago Tuesday, Sept 29 By S. J. Jarvis ThedaCare announced on Sep. 29 that it will host "A Walk to Remember," an event designed to bring together families, friends, and supporters to honor the memory of babies lost during pregnancy or infancy and provide comfort after loss. The event is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Gordon Bubolz Nature Preserve's Black Bear Den Auditorium in Appleton, with registration taking place from 10-10:30 a.m. The walk is supported by the ThedaCare Resolve Through Sharing bereavement program and made possible with assistance from the ThedaCare Family of Foundations as part of National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month observances in the area. Ashley Ebert, registered nurse at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah and Resolve Through Sharing bereavement coordinator, said, "We're encouraging our community to come together to help support patients and families who have experienced the loss of a baby, including through miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth or neonatal death. Our hope is that this event reinforces an important message: these families are not alone and we are here to continue offering the care, resources and support they deserve." A highlight of "A Walk to Remember" will be a short walk leading up to a tree-planting ceremony accompanied by music and meditation. "Each participating family will have an opportunity to plant a tree in memory of their baby," Ebert said. "This serves as a memorial to their baby and offers a place of comfort that they can always return to." Bereavement coordinators and a chaplain will also be available for anyone seeking additional support or with questions. Ebert said that losing an infant can be difficult for many families who often grieve quietly, "We want to help create a space where they feel comfortable sharing their experiences and know they don't have to navigate their grief alone. This program is one of the ways we're here to support them." ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Appleton contributes significantly toward community well-being through health needs assessments; features integrated specialty departments on its main hospital campus; appears on Newsweek's list of best hospitals; operates nearly 150 acute care beds with over 1,200 staff members; provides orthopedic care, cardiovascular services, cancer treatment, general surgery as well as family birth options; all as part of its role within the nonprofit ThedaCare health system, according to the official website.

Wild Rose firefighter recovers from esophageal cancer with robotic surgery at ThedaCare.

Wild Rose firefighter recovers from esophageal cancer with robotic surgery at ThedaCare. Scott Pudil of Wild Rose Fire Department overcame esophageal cancer after early detection led to advanced robotic surgery by ThedaCare specialists. His recovery exceeded expectations thanks to minimally invasive procedures performed locally. 2 days ago Wednesday, Sept 23 By S. J. Jarvis Scott Pudil, assistant chief of the Wild Rose Fire Department, underwent treatment for esophageal cancer with support from his local ThedaCare team, according to a Sep. 23 article. Pudil's health issues began in August 2024 when he passed out at home and was found to have blood clots in both lungs. Despite initial treatment and a return to his regular activities, including work and firefighting duties, Pudil developed persistent acid reflux symptoms. In fall 2025, nurse practitioner Molly Szymanski at ThedaCare encouraged further investigation into his symptoms. After reviewing his medical history and referring him to Dr. David Schultz for an endoscopy, doctors discovered an abnormal lesion in Pudil's esophagus. Dr. Tim Edison performed an endoscopic mucosal resection to remove precancerous growths; however, follow-up tests indicated some cancer remained. Dr. Schultz then recommended a robotic-assisted esophagectomy at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah. Raymond Georgen assisted during the procedure, which involved minimally invasive techniques through small incisions in the abdomen and chest. "We were able to bring him to the Neenah hospital and he was able to undergo the latest in minimally invasive robotic surgery," said Georgen. "We successfully removed the tumor and found no lymph node involvement, which was fantastic." Pudil recovered faster than expected after surgery with respiratory, speech and physical therapy support at the hospital before returning home for continued recovery. "Dr. Schultz figured 10 to 12 weeks before I went back to work. I was back at work in eight," Pudil said. Today Pudil continues follow-up care with Drs. Schultz and Thomas Klinkhammer of ThedaCare Cancer Care while serving as assistant fire chief and working full time elsewhere. Reflecting on his experience, he said: "It's probably the best I've felt in 10 years." He also noted that esophageal cancer has a five-year survival rate of just 22.2%, often due to late diagnosis. ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Appleton is part of the nonprofit ThedaCare health system operating nearly 150 acute care beds with more than 1,200 staff members as well as over 750 providers; it features integrated specialty departments including orthopedic care, cardiovascular services, cancer treatment, general surgery and family birth options on its main campus in Appleton - and appears on Newsweek's list of top hospitals - according to the official website.

Connected for Kids partners celebrate official opening of Junior Achievement health care storefront.

Connected for Kids partners celebrate official opening of Junior Achievement health care storefront. Jul 03, 2026 Children's Wisconsin Media Relations Junior Achievement of Wisconsin and the Connected for Kids partner organizations - Children's Wisconsin, Emplify Health by Bellin and ThedaCare - officially inaugurated the Connected for Kids Experiential Learning Storefront at the Junior Achievement location in Appleton. The celebration marks the formal opening of a first-of-its-kind, immersive health care learning experience designed to inspire the next generation of health care professionals across Northeast Wisconsin. The storefront, which opened earlier this year, invites students in grades 4 through 6 to step into the roles of health care leaders - exploring patient care, learning how medical organizations operate and discovering the wide range of career options available in this field. The storefront will be used for experiential learning through JA BizTown and JA Finance Park. JA BizTown is a nationally recognized entrepreneurial simulation that brings real-world industries to life through hands-on learning. JA Finance Park is a personal financial planning and career capstone experience where students apply learning to develop a personal budget. The Connected for Kids storefront extends these experiences into the health care sector, allowing students to become a health care CEO, market the partner organizations' services and learn what it is really like to work in health care. "We are incredibly proud to welcome Children's Wisconsin, Emplify Health by Bellin and ThedaCare as partners in the JA BizTown and Finance Park experience," said Matt Juedes, Director of Development and Stewardship for Junior Achievement. "These opportunities have always been about more than business - they're about opening doors for young people and showing them what is possible. Having the Connected for Kids partner organizations come together in this space sends a powerful message to our students: your future career in health care starts right here." The Connected for Kids pediatric partnership aims to improve the health and well-being of children and adolescents in Northeast and Central Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Together, its partner organizations have worked collaboratively to design a storefront experience that is both medically meaningful and genuinely engaging for children. The initiative reflects the partners' collective belief that early exposure to health care careers can strengthen individual futures and the health care workforce. "We are excited about what this storefront represents - not only for the children who will experience it, but for the future of pediatric care in our region," said Matt Buelow, MD, Medical Director of the Northeast Region for Children's Wisconsin and Medical Director for Connected for Kids. "As a physician, I know how important it is to inspire young people to consider this field. And as a father, I have seen firsthand how meaningful and lasting this kind of experience can be. We are proud to be part of something that helps make that connection real." For Emplify Health by Bellin, the Connected for Kids storefront reflects the organization's deep commitment to the communities it serves - and to nurturing the curiosity and potential of every young person in them. "Bringing this storefront to life required thoughtful collaboration and a dedication to creating something meaningful for kiddos," said Jamie Hagenow-Sekora, Pediatrics Specialties and Primary Care Pediatrics and Adolescent Team Leader at Emplify Health by Bellin. "We worked with our Connected for Kids partners and the Junior Achievement team to ensure every element of this experience resonates with students. We believe that when kids understand health care, they are better equipped to take ownership of their own well-being - and maybe even get inspired to become the caregivers of tomorrow." ThedaCare leaders echo that sense of shared purpose and community investment. "The Connected for Kids partnership is a testament to what we can accomplish when health care organizations prioritize collaboration over competition," said Mark Cockley, MD, Senior Vice President of Population Health for the North Region of Froedtert ThedaCare. "We share a vision of a healthier, more vibrant region where people in our communities are inspired to live their unique, best life - and we know that vision begins with investing in our children. This storefront is one more way we are living that commitment every day." The ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together organizational leadership, community representatives and students who participate in the JA programs. Following the ribbon cutting, attendees had the opportunity to experience the Connected for Kids storefront and learn more about what students encounter during their BizTown and Finance Park visits. Children's Wisconsin Media Relations Children's Wisconsin knows kids need healthy families and strong communities to live well. That's why Children's Wisconsin develop services and community partnerships designed to support children and families where they live, learn, work and play.
