GM, Ford turn EV battery bust into Energy Storage bet.

GM, Ford turn EV battery bust into Energy Storage bet. The biggest U.S. legacy automakers look to turn the losses from their underutilized electric vehicle battery capacity into a new profitable business to seize the soaring demand for battery storage energy systems. GM and Ford, which, due to poor demand, have written down billions of U.S. dollars of investments in the EV expansion push, are now pivoting to the energy storage business to meet the spike in demand for battery energy storage from data centers and infrastructure to support the electric grid. The underutilized electric vehicle battery capacity, which cost Ford a massive $19.5 billion write-down and GM cumulative $10.9 billion charges as they scaled back their electric vehicle businesses, is now being put to use for battery energy storage systems (BESS). Two of Detroit's Big Three automakers are now competing in offering battery energy storage, too. At the end of 2025, Ford launched a BESS business as it reshuffled its EV strategy to offer only the most competitive EV models and expand customer choice with additional hybrid and gasoline vehicles. To scale up its battery energy storage business, Ford is repurposing existing U.S. battery manufacturing capacity in Glendale, Kentucky. "This strategic initiative will leverage currently underutilized electric vehicle battery capacity to create a new, diversified and profitable revenue stream for Ford. The company also plans to invest roughly $2 billion in the next two years to scale the business," the auto giant said. Ford currently plans to deploy at least 20 GWh of battery storage annually by late 2027. Ford Energy, the new wholly-owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company, will provide United States-assembled BESS for utilities, data centers, and large industrial and commercial customers in the United States. Ford Energy aims to fill the gap in the U.S. energy storage market created by the convergence of data center growth, renewable energy integration, and grid resilience requirements, it said. In May, Ford Energy announced a five-year framework agreement with EDF power solutions North America, under which EDF power solutions will have the ability to procure up to 4 gigawatt-hours of DC Block BESS annually, representing a total potential volume of up to 20 GWh over the term of the agreement. "We are delivering the kind of predictable quality and long-term operational confidence that grid operators and large-scale developers require," said Lisa Drake, president, Ford Energy. GM has also launched an energy storage business and vehicle-to-grid technology offerings. "To fix a power grid stressed by power-hungry AI data centers, we are also partnering with Peak Energy to develop and deploy built-for-purpose sodium ion chemistry for grid-scale storage systems," the automaker said in June. Even before the launch of the battery storage business, GM had provided repurposed second-life battery packs to help power the largest microgrid in North America at Redwood Materials' installation in Sparks, Nevada. GM says it is now the first automaker working with Redwood Materials to create true circularity across the entire battery lifecycle. After the disappointment with the EV manufacturing business amid crumbling demand in the United States, GM and Ford vie to capture the soaring energy storage market. Earlier this month, the U.S. Energy Storage Market Outlook Q3 2026 by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence showed that the U.S. installed a record-high energy storage capacity in the second quarter of the year as grid operators and utilities turned to storage to boost grid reliability and meet rising power demand. The industry installed 20.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of new capacity in the second quarter of the year, making it the largest quarter for installations on record and bringing total installations in the first half of 2026 to 30.8 GWh, according to the report. Battery energy storage supplied more electricity to the grid in the first eight months of 2026 than in all of 2025, the report showed. Utility-scale battery storage capacity in the United States has jumped over the last three years, with an annual average growth rate of 70%, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said last month. Continued support for Blue Diamond employees.

Continued support for Blue Diamond employees. When we hosted a Job & Resource Fair for employees impacted by layoffs at Blue Diamond Growers in June, we knew our work wouldn't stop there. That first event brought together 27 employers and workforce partners and gave approximately 130 employees a chance to explore new opportunities, connect with resources, and even interview for jobs. We were excited to see one attendee receive an offer on the spot. Since then, our team has continued looking for ways to help Blue Diamond employees take their next step. Another opportunity to connect. On July 31, SETA Sacramento Works is hosting another hiring opportunity for affected Blue Diamond employees, this time with Peak Energy, a growing energy storage company opening a new manufacturing facility in Sacramento's Metro Air Park. Peak Energy's new 183,000 square-foot facility is expected to create 239 local jobs over the next 10 months, making it an exciting new employment opportunity right here in our region. Connecting Blue Diamond employees directly with a company preparing to grow its local workforce is exactly the kind of opportunity our Rapid Response team works to create. Rapid Response is more than one event. When a layoff happens, there's no single solution that works for everyone. Some employees may be ready to jump right into a new position. Others may want to explore training, update their skills or get help figuring out what comes next. Our team works alongside employers and affected employees to make that transition a little easier. Our work with Blue Diamond is a great example of what that can look like: starting with immediate support when layoffs are announced and continuing to find new opportunities for employees in the weeks and months that follow. Here for employers and employees. Workforce changes aren't easy, but employers and employees don't have to navigate them alone. If your organization is facing layoffs or other workforce changes, we can help you support your employees through the transition. And if your business is growing, we can help connect you with talented local workers looking for their next opportunity. It's all part of building a stronger workforce and helping people keep moving forward.

This Week in Energy Storage: CATL's sodium-ion launch, NFPA 855 mandates, and the US factory boom.

This Week in Energy Storage: CATL's sodium-ion launch, NFPA 855 mandates, and the US factory boom. The Week in BESS: CATL Ships Sodium, NFPA Raises the Bar, and America Builds GLOBAL - July 25, 2026 - In energy storage, a week is a long time. Here's your 5-minute briefing on the four stories that shaped the industry this week - and what they mean for your 2026-2027 project planning. Story 1: CATL's TENER Sodium - Sodium-ion Goes Commercial What happened: CATL officially unveiled the TENER Sodium Energy Storage System - the world's first field-validated, commercially shipping sodium-ion BESS. Each unit delivers over 30 MWh of rated capacity, purpose-built for utility-scale deployment. Why it matters: This is the moment sodium-ion crossed from "pilot project" to "shipping product." CATL's move validates what early adopters have been saying for 18 months - SIB is not a science experiment, it's a procurement decision. The EXLIPORC angle: Exliporcpower launched its 230Ah SIB prismatic cells into mass production earlier this quarter. While CATL focuses on utility-scale containers, EXLIPORC is bringing sodium-ion to the C&I and mid-scale market - the factory owners and microgrid operators who need price-stable storage without mega-project lead times. Story 2: NFPA 855 (2026 Edition) - Large-Scale Fire Testing is Now Law What happened: The 2026 edition of NFPA 855 came into full effect, mandating Large-Scale Fire Testing (LSFT) for all new BESS installations. Permits are now being denied for systems that can't produce UL 9540A Level 3 or 4 certification. Why it matters: BESS insurance premiums are surging 40-60% for non-certified systems. Some carriers are declining coverage outright. The fire safety compliance gap is becoming a financial wall - and it will separate the serious manufacturers from the price-war competitors. The EXLIPORC angle: Its 261kWh liquid-cooled cabinet uses sealed-loop cooling that physically isolates modules, eliminating the propagation pathways that air-cooled systems create. Compliance is built into the architecture, not retrofitted after a test failure. Story 3: Peak Energy's US Sodium-ion Factory - 8.5 GWh and Growing What happened: Peak Energy announced a new US-based sodium-ion production facility targeting 8.5 GWh annual capacity, joining ESS Inc in the race to commercialize domestically produced SIB for the American market. Why it matters: The US is building a sodium-ion supply chain independent of China's lithium dominance. For project developers, this means shorter supply lines, tariff-free procurement, and an alternative to the lithium pricing rollercoaster. The EXLIPORC angle: While US factories ramp up (timeline: 2027-2028), EXLIPORC SIB cells are shipping now. Exliporcpower is filling the gap between "announced capacity" and "delivered product." Story 4: The Insurance Market Speaks - Safety Data is the New Pricing Signal What happened: The global BESS insurance market hit $4.8 billion in 2025 and is projected to exceed $14 billion by 2034. But access is tightening - underwriters now demand real-time gas detection data, UL 9540A Level 4 test reports, and cooling architecture documentation before quoting. Why it matters: Insurers have become the industry's unofficial regulator. Even in jurisdictions without strict fire codes, uninsurable systems are unfinanceable systems. The EXLIPORC angle: Exliporcpower provide every B2B buyer with a Fire Safety Compliance Package - LSFT summaries, cooling architecture documentation, and suppression system specifications - purpose-built to satisfy insurer due diligence requirements. The Bottom Line Three themes dominated this week: sodium-ion is commercial, fire safety is mandatory, and insurance is the new gatekeeper. If your supplier can't speak fluently on all three, they're selling yesterday's technology. Sodium-Ion batteries vs lithium: is a new era of grid-scale Energy Storage beginning?

Sodium-Ion batteries vs lithium: is a new era of grid-scale Energy Storage beginning? Sodium-ion batteries are emerging as a viable alternative to lithium-ion for grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). Explore the technology, key 2026 projects, advantages, limitations, and India's role in the growing sodium-ion ecosystem. 22 Jul 2026 09:58 IST Lithium has run the battery world for decades. It's in your phone, your laptop, and most of the giant battery sheds (called BESS, or Battery Energy Storage Systems) that store solar and wind power for later use. In 2026, sodium is challenging that, and this time with real contracts, not just lab papers. In June 2026, CATL, the world's largest battery maker, unveiled its TENER Sodium BESS in Munich, calling it the first "field-validated" sodium-ion storage system. A month before that, CATL signed a three-year, 60 GWh sodium-ion supply deal with HyperStrong, the largest sodium-ion order ever placed. That's not hype, but a contract. The question is whether the technology itself supports it. What is a sodium-ion battery? Why is it feasible? Every battery moves charged particles (ions) between two ends to generate electricity. Lithium-ion batteries move lithium ions. Sodium-ion batteries move sodium ions instead, the same element found in table salt. Sodium sits just below lithium on the periodic table. It behaves similarly, so sodium-ion cells can be built on nearly the same factory lines as lithium-ion cells, with minor tweaks. That's a big reason production has scaled up so fast: companies aren't starting from zero. Lithium-ion isn't one single chemistry - the version that matters most for BESS is LFP (lithium iron phosphate), which makes up around 90% of grid-scale storage deployed today. NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) is the higher-density chemistry used in most EVs and electronics, but it's rarely used in stationary storage because of its higher cost. Sodium-ion is being compared against both below. The energy density gap (sodium is roughly 15-40% lower than lithium-ion, and further behind NMC specifically) is sodium's biggest weakness. That rules it out of phones and premium, long-range EVs, where every gram and cubic centimetre counts. But a BESS unit sits in a fixed container on the ground, and hence it doesn't need to be light or compact. That's why sodium-ion is being compared against LFP, not NMC, for its first real commercial home: grid-scale storage. 2026 momentum: key deals and projects. The clearest sign of momentum came on June 22, 2026, when CATL unveiled its TENER Sodium Energy Storage System in Munich, calling it the world's first field-validated sodium-ion BESS. Customer deliveries begin in September 2026, with CATL aiming to ship around 1 GWh by the end of the year. A month earlier, in April 2026, CATL signed a three-year, 60 GWh sodium-ion supply deal with HyperStrong, its first partner for sodium-ion energy storage and the largest sodium-ion order placed to date. Behind both moves is real money: in May 2026, CATL confirmed it's investing roughly RMB 5 billion (about $700 million) to add 40 GWh of annual sodium-ion capacity at its Fuding base, on top of a further 160 GWh planned at its Jining site in Shandong. The US has been building its own momentum through 2026, mostly through sodium-ion startup Peak Energy. In February, Swiss firm Energy Vault locked in a 1.5 GWh supply deal to pair Peak's batteries with AI data-center storage. In March, Peak and RWE Americas announced a pilot in Eastern Wisconsin that will bring the grid operator MISO its first-ever sodium-ion battery. In June, General Motors took a strategic stake in Peak and agreed to develop sodium-ion cells at its Michigan battery labs, with GM keeping exclusive manufacturing rights, a sign that even a car maker sees more near-term value in sodium for grid storage than in EV. That run of deals culminated in July, when Peak announced a $71 million, 183,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Sacramento, California, described as the first dedicated grid-scale sodium-ion factory in the US, with 4 GWh of annual output planned and shipments due to start in early 2027. By that point, Peak said its combined customer commitments (Jupiter Power, Energy Vault and RWE Americas) had passed 6 GWh. India's angle. India has negligible lithium reserves, making sodium-ion strategically attractive. Faradion (backed by Reliance) has worked on the chemistry for years. Naxion Energy claims it launched India's first sodium-ion energy storage systems in late 2025, and Macsen Labs is setting up a sodium-ion cell pilot line in 2026. India needs an estimated 41.7 GW/208 GWh of cumulative BESS capacity by 2030 to hit its renewable energy targets, a lithium-free, factory-adaptable chemistry fits that need well. What's still holding it back. Beyond lower energy density, sodium salts absorb moisture more easily than lithium salts, requiring drier factory conditions and extra dehumidification gear, adding roughly 8% to setup costs. Sodium-ion also remains a small fraction of total battery storage deployed globally, so long-term durability data (10+ years of real operation) is still limited compared to the decade-plus track record lithium-ion already has. Verdict: hype or real opportunity? For grid-scale BESS specifically, this looks like a real, early-stage opportunity rather than hype. The energy density weakness that keeps sodium out of phones and EVs barely matters in a stationary storage container. Combined with lower material-supply risk, non-flammability, and strong cold-weather performance, that's why CATL, HyperStrong, Peak Energy, and Indian players are signing GWh-scale contracts, not just running pilots. It's not a lithium replacement yet. See it like a complement, not a takeover, for the next few years while costs and long-duration performance data catch up to the announcements. CATL's first commercial shipments (from September 2026) and the Peak Energy-Jupiter Power project going live will be the real tests of whether the numbers hold up outside the press release.
