Rolls-Royce welcomes landmark contract with UK Government for delivery of Small Modular Reactors | Rolls-Royce.

Rolls-Royce welcomes landmark contract with UK Government for delivery of Small Modular Reactors | Rolls-Royce. Monday 13 April 2026 06:10 AM Rolls-Royce welcomes landmark contract with UK Government for delivery of Small Modular Reactors Rolls-Royce (LSE: RR., ADR: RYCEY) today welcomes the announcement that Rolls-Royce SMR has signed a landmark contract with Great British Energy - Nuclear (GBE-N) that paves the way for the design and delivery of the first small modular reactors (SMRs) in the UK. This marks another important step on the journey of Rolls-Royce SMR towards creating high-skilled jobs, improving the UK's energy security, boosting the supply chain and generating economic growth for the nation. In November last year, the UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, announced that three SMRs will be sited at Wylfa, on the coast of Ynys Môn (Anglesey) in North Wales. That followed the news in July that Czech utility CEZ Group had signed an early works agreement enabling the launch of site work in Czechia for Rolls-Royce SMR to provide up to 3GW of low-carbon energy. Today's two-stage contract with GBE-N will enable site-specific design activity and preparations for the site build at Wylfa, as well as allowing Rolls-Royce SMR to order long lead-time equipment from the supply chain. The contract brings certainty to the UK SMR programme and differentiates Rolls-Royce SMR as the only company with multiple commitments in Europe. Tufan erginbilgic, CEO, Rolls-Royce, said: This is a critical milestone for Rolls-Royce SMR, for Rolls-Royce and for the UK as the Government looks to realise its ambition of a 'golden age' of new nuclear. It is a vote of confidence in our unique nuclear capabilities and further evidence that the strategic choices we have made in the transformation of Rolls-Royce are delivering. It also provides crucial contractual certainty in our domestic market that will unlock the opportunity to deploy a global fleet of Rolls-Royce SMRs. "Rolls-Royce SMR now has multiple commitments in Europe and is well placed to become a market leader globally. As activity ramps up in the UK and in the Czech Republic, these projects are already generating returns." "The team in Rolls-Royce SMR have an unrivalled track record in nuclear design, regulatory engagement, manufacturing and assembly and I would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication in getting to this important stage." This contract with GBE-N will help Rolls-Royce SMR retain its crucial first mover advantage in a market that is growing and attracting significant international interest. The business is currently the furthest through any European regulatory process. About Rolls-Royce Holdings plc News and stories. Rolls-Royce secures $761M UK government funding to develop small modular reactors

Rolls-Royce has secured up to £599 million from the UK's national wealth fund to develop the country's first small modular reactors (SMRs) at Wylfa on Anglesey. The funding is expected to create approximately 1,000 jobs. The investment supports Rolls-Royce's SMR technology, which aims to produce nuclear power stations in factories to reduce costs and accelerate installation. The company signed a contract with state-owned Great British Energy – Nuclear to begin work immediately on the reactors. Rolls-Royce SMR, majority-owned by the FTSE 100 engineering firm alongside Qatar's sovereign wealth fund and other investors, employs over 1,000 people developing technology that will also be deployed in the Czech Republic. Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the investment would strengthen energy security and create skilled jobs whilst building homegrown nuclear technology.

Government signs first technology design deal with Rolls Royce for small modular reactors.

Government signs first technology design deal with Rolls Royce for small modular reactors. Contract to kickstart site-specific design and planning work on first three SMR projects The nuclear division of the government's net zero energy company has signed a contract with Rolls-Royce to formally start design on the UK's first three small modular reactors. The deal between Great British Energy and Rolls Royce comes ten months after the latter was selected as the government's preferred technology partner for the development of the mini reactors (SMRs), which are seen as a key component in the country's net zero transition. Concept design for a Rolls Royce SMR The contract will require Rolls Royce's SMR business to begin site-specific design, regulatory engagement and planning processes for the UK's first batch of SMR projects ahead of a final investment decision by the government. The company is also working on six SMRs in Czechia. Great British Energy Nuclear (GBEN) chair Simon Bowen said the deal was an "immense moment" for the UK nuclear programme and represents "true recognition of the efforts made across GBE-N, Rolls-Royce SMR and Government to get to this point". The Civil Engineering Contractors Association has welcomed the deal but cautioned that it must be followed up with "sustained focus on delivery" including clear project milestones, a credible long-term pipeline, proportionate and efficient regulation, and procurement routes that allow firms of all sizes to invest with confidence. Funding of £2.6bn has already been allocated to the SMR programme in the 2025 spending review to enable the contract and wider programme delivery, with more than £350m in contracts awarded so far. British firms working on the programme so far include Mace Consult, Turner & Townsend and WSP. Rachel Reeves said today's deal will "strengthen our energy security, create skilled jobs and help to build a new generation of homegrown nuclear technology that will power our economy for decades to come". Energy secretary Ed Miliband added: "At a time of global instability, this is a major milestone for Britain's energy security." Miliband said the government's clean energy ambitions were "the only route to getting off the rollercoaster of fossil fuels and take back control of our energy independence". Oil prices climbed above USD $100 per barrel again this morning after the collapse of talks between Iran and the US and Israel over Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's oil supplies travel. The US has said it will start a blockade of Iranian ports this afternoon in an effort to pressure Iran to come back to the table and cease its threats to shipping.

Rolls-Royce accelerates India expansion with major push in defence, aerospace and energy!

Rolls-Royce accelerates India expansion with major push in defence, aerospace and energy! Friday 10 April 2026, 3:55:07 PM Rolls-Royce has unveiled an ambitious plan to significantly scale up its presence in India, positioning the country as a key strategic market across defence, civil aviation and energy. This move aligns closely with India's long-term Viksit Bharat vision and the government's continued focus on strengthening domestic capabilities under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. At the heart of this expansion is Rolls-Royce's intent to deepen its involvement in India's defence ecosystem. The company is actively exploring the co-development of a next-generation 120 kN combat jet engine, a project that could mark a major leap in India's indigenous aerospace capabilities. In parallel, discussions are underway to establish partnerships aimed at localising the manufacturing of engines for the Indian Army, Navy and Coast Guard. Beyond defence, Rolls-Royce is also evaluating opportunities to deliver advanced power and energy solutions to support critical infrastructure and industrial growth in the country. If these initiatives materialise, they could generate a substantial economic impact. Rolls-Royce estimates the creation of up to 10,000 jobs across its operations and wider partner ecosystem in India, more than doubling its current workforce footprint. Additionally, the company anticipates a ten-fold increase in sourcing from India, opening up significant opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises to integrate into global supply chains and contribute to high-value manufacturing. The strategic importance of India was further reinforced during a recent meeting between Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgic and Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Discussions focused on how Rolls-Royce's advanced technologies could support India's priorities around national security, energy resilience and industrial development. The company reiterated its commitment to contributing to India's self-reliance journey by fostering indigenous propulsion technologies, expanding local manufacturing and strengthening long-term industrial partnerships. Rolls-Royce already maintains a strong and well-established presence in India. More than 1,400 of its engines are currently in service across key defence platforms, including Jaguar combat aircraft, Hawk advanced jet trainers, Arjun main battle tanks, and multiple vessels operated by the Indian Navy and Coast Guard. The company also plays a critical role in supporting mission readiness for MTU engines and collaborates closely with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to maintain and service in-use aero engines. Its industrial ecosystem in India is extensive and continues to grow. Rolls-Royce has forged partnerships with over 100 Indian suppliers, including leading names such as Tata Group, Bharat Forge, Godrej & Boyce and Azad Engineering. These collaborations are critical in building a resilient and globally competitive supply chain rooted in India. Furthermore, the company has recently expanded its Global Capability and Innovation Centre in Bengaluru, which supports engineering, digital and enterprise operations for both civil aerospace and defence programmes worldwide. Its joint venture, International Aerospace Manufacturing Private Limited, operates advanced manufacturing facilities in Bengaluru and Hosur, producing high-precision aero-engine components for global markets. Overall, Rolls-Royce's expansion signals a strong vote of confidence in India's manufacturing capabilities and its potential to emerge as a global hub for advanced engineering and aerospace innovation. Rolls-Royce and Voltaria to build large scale battery storage facility in Scotland.

Rolls-Royce and Voltaria to build large scale battery storage facility in Scotland. Rolls-Royce has begun construction on an EPC contract from leading battery energy storage platform, Voltaria Helios Energy Storage, to supply a large scale battery energy storage facility in Falkirk, Scotland. This is the first large battery energy storage project by Rolls-Royce in the UK and will help stabilise the grid and support the UK's Clean Power 2030 Action Plan. The mtu EnergyPack, with a capacity of 86 MWh and an output of 43 MW - which is equivalent to the demand of around 10 000 homes or a large industrial site - will connect to the grid in 2026 and come online in 2027. It will store electrical energy during periods of high renewable energy production and feed it back into the grid during peak demand. The battery storage will facilitate additional renewable generation by avoiding uneconomical turndown of wind generation. Rolls-Royce will maintain the system for 15 years. The UK is considered Europe's most mature market for battery energy storage systems, and it continues to grow rapidly. With its Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, the UK has set a target of providing 27 GW of battery storage capacity by 2030, primarily for grid-connected applications to support carbon-free electricity supply. This capacity will help balance supply and demand, maximise electricity generation from renewable sources by reducing the requirement for expensive curtailment of renewable generation, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Nigel Jefferson, CEO at Voltaria, said: "The Bankside project in Falkirk is the first of many battery energy storage sites Voltaria intends to deliver and operate. Rolls-Royce were selected because we were impressed by their commercial and technical offering, as well as their technical advice and engagement in the run-up to the decision, and their 15-year full-wrap long-term service agreement. Rolls-Royce and the CATL battery solution are market leaders, and both stand for quality, so our expectations for the delivery and operation of this project are high. Rolls-Royce has also leveraged the Scottish supply chain, which is great to see." Andreas Görtz, President Business Unit Mobile & Sustainable at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, added: "As a European turnkey integrator, we foster the energy transition by delivering storage solutions - from system design and EPC delivery to intelligent control and lifecycle support. Our collaboration with Voltaria draws on all the experience we have gained in over 200 battery projects worldwide."
