Construction technology company ICON has announced a $200 million Series D round co-led by Baillie Gifford and funds managed by BlackRock. Capital Factory, CAZ Investments, Moderne Ventures, Moonshots Capital, Norwest, Overmatch, The Syndicate, and Tiger Global also joined, along with other new and returning backers. ICON reports it is on track to quadruple revenue in 2026 and has built more than 270 homes and structures across five states and two countries. The company says its current organization reflects an evolution from proving a home-building technology to scaling a construction platform. Titan Manufacturing and a New Austin R&D Site ICON will use the capital to begin producing Titan, its multi-story robotic construction system, at its factory in Austin, Texas. The round will also fund a large-scale research and development (R&D) facility in the city, continued work on its next-generation construction technologies, including Titan and Olympus, expansion into Texas, Florida, Washington D.C., and other U.S. markets, and team growth. According to the company, Titan is engineered to shorten construction of an average home by six weeks at a cost 40% below the national average, a figure based on internal cost modeling compared with the National Association of Home Builders' annual report. ICON's proprietary 3D printing material, FormCrete, is designed to produce walls rated for winds above 175 mph, compared with 40 mph for traditional stick frames, and a fire rating of more than two hours, versus 0.5 hours for conventional construction. ICON attributes the platform's efficiency and scalability to its vertical integration across robotics, software, building materials, and building design. "Construction automation has crossed from potential into proven reality," said Jason Ballard, co-founder and CEO of ICON. "This round puts that reality in builders' hands: more Titan systems deployed across the country, deeper capability in housing, commercial, and defense, and continued work on the technology that will one day build humanity's first structures beyond Earth." Housing Shortfall and an Aging Workforce ICON places the investment against broader pressures in U.S. construction. Citing industry data, the company says the U.S. is roughly 4 million homes short of demand and describes the $16 trillion global construction sector as having changed little over the past 50 years. It also points to labor figures showing that 10% of U.S. construction workers are under 25, while 41% of the current workforce is expected to retire by 2031. Luke Ward, Private Companies Investment Manager at Baillie Gifford, said the firm finds ICON's system compelling for its technology and for how it accounts for the business realities that shape a project's success. "With it, builders can take on more work, owners can get better value for money, and communities can get more of what they need, sooner," he said. Business Units, Military Projects, and NASA Work ICON operates three divisions. Build covers residential homes as well as commercial and hospitality buildings; Tech develops a unified construction platform for builders; and Prime is the company's defense and space division. Its project portfolio includes Wolf Ranch in Georgetown, Texas, built with Lennar, which ICON describes as the world's first and largest community of 3D printed homes. The company has also built more than 100 homes for people experiencing homelessness through Community First! Village in Austin, as well as military installations for the U.S. Army. In January 2026, ICON broke ground on 10 barracks at Fort Bliss. The company says the project is the largest deployment of robotic construction technology in Department of War history and the first set of additively manufactured structures to meet the Pentagon's Unified Facilities Criteria. ICON Prime has been awarded more than $370 million in government contracts and continues to develop lunar construction systems with NASA under Project Olympus. From Printing Its Own Projects to Putting Titan in Builders' Hands ICON's Series D centers on manufacturing Titan in Austin so that builders outside the company can deploy it. ICON's communications team describes this goal as scaling the manufacturing, shipping, and deployment of Titan "into the hands of builders globally." Working with builders has come up in ICON's funding before. When ICON raised $207 million in a 2021 Series B, the round was set to accelerate R&D of its technologies, scale its production capacity, and expand its team. Norwest's Jeff Crowe, who joined ICON's board, said he was particularly excited about the opportunity for ICON to collaborate with home builders. Danish manufacturer COBOD offers a reference point for the model ICON is moving toward with Titan, supplying construction 3D printers to other companies, and had sold fifty machines by May 2022. Its construction capabilities largely revolve around the BOD2, a modular gantry system that Habitat for Humanity has used to print a three-bedroom family home. COBOD has also worked with its part-shareholder PERI Group to print a three-story apartment building. GE Renewable Energy, which has worked with COBOD since 2019, made a minority investment in the company in 2022, two years after GE partnered with COBOD and Holcim to co-develop 3D printed wind turbine towers. BlackRock and Baillie Gifford bet big on Icon 3D-printed homes. Icon, an Austin-based construction technology company specializing in 3D-printed homes, has secured $200 million in Series D funding co-led by Baillie Gifford and funds managed by BlackRock, bringing its total funding to $700 million and its reported valuation to $1.4 billion. The investment comes as Icon expands the commercial rollout of its Titan robotic construction system, which can print multi-story buildings. Launched commercially in March 2026, Titan represents a significant development from the company's earlier technology, which was limited to single-story structures. According to Icon, the system can cut average home construction time by six weeks, reduce the number of workers required and lower overall building costs by 40%. Chief Executive and co-founder Jason Ballard said Icon sought investors with experience helping physical businesses progress from early-stage development to large-scale operations. He highlighted Baillie Gifford's investments in companies such as Nvidia, Tesla and SpaceX, alongside BlackRock's extensive real estate portfolio. Funding to expand technology and reach new markets. Icon plans to use the latest capital to scale Titan, develop additional technologies and expand beyond its existing markets in Texas, Florida and Washington, D.C. The company intends to bring its construction systems to more locations across the United States. The investment arrives as traditional homebuilders face pressure from elevated interest rates and rising land, labor and materials costs. At the same time, the United States continues to experience a housing shortage, with some estimates suggesting that as many as four million additional homes are needed to meet demand. Baillie Gifford investment manager Luke Ward said Icon's approach was compelling because its technology works alongside the commercial realities of construction projects. He described the opportunity as consistent with the investment firm's focus on businesses with long-term growth potential. Icon previously deployed its printers on projects of its own, including a large 3D-printed residential development outside Austin built with homebuilder Lennar. It is now shifting toward selling its technology to other construction companies, supported by special financing arrangements from Wells Fargo. The bank is also offering incentives to buyers of 3D-printed homes. Ballard said reservations involving actual deposits for the company's technology had exceeded forecasts for next year by tenfold. Interest has come from both publicly traded homebuilders and smaller private construction firms. Growth ambitions extend beyond housing. Founded eight years ago, Icon aims to make homebuilding faster, more affordable and more sustainable. Ballard said the company expects revenue to increase fourfold in 2026 and anticipates at least doubling revenue again in 2027, based on its current pipeline. He also identified a potential initial public offering as a future possibility. Beyond residential construction, Icon is developing robotic systems for the U.S. military and NASA. The company has received more than $370 million in government contracts connected to Project Olympus, an initiative focused on developing construction technology that could eventually support building infrastructure on the Moon. Ballard said he expected further developments from NASA concerning a potential lunar base during the second half of 2026. For investors and the housing industry, Icon's latest funding highlights growing interest in construction automation as a response to affordability pressures and labor constraints. The company's next challenge will be demonstrating that its technology can deliver the promised cost and productivity gains consistently as it expands to more builders and markets.
