About the company

Bank of America runs one of the largest US banks, serving consumers, small businesses, wealthy families, corporations and institutional investors. Alongside checking accounts, credit cards, mortgages and business loans, it owns the Merrill brokerage, a private bank for wealthy clients and a global investment bank that advises on deals and trades stocks and bonds. Customers reach it through thousands of branches and ATMs and its mobile banking app. It earns money mainly from the gap between what it charges on loans and pays on deposits, plus fees from advice, asset management, deal work and trading. It grew from a San Francisco bank founded in 1904 and is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina.

  • Cheap funding cushions profits: $530 billion of its $2.03 trillion in deposits paid no interest at June 2026.

What critics are saying

Bank of America hit with $1.2B Treasury penalty over $5B in unreported suspicious transactions

Bank of America faces more than $1.21 billion in penalties from the US Treasury Department for failing to report more than $5 billion in suspicious transactions over several years. Some of the activity was linked to Chinese money laundering networks and operations along the southwest border. The penalty is the third-largest in Treasury history. It includes a $750 million civil money penalty from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), the largest the OCC has levied against any bank. Regulators said problems continued after the bank signed a 2024 cease-and-desist order. The bank admitted it willfully violated the Bank Secrecy Act. The charge will cut third-quarter net income by about 17 cents per share. Chief executive officer Brian Moynihan said the bank has added thousands of staff and is deep into remediation. Third-quarter net income was $6.9 billion.

Wells Fargo, Bank of America and J.B. Hunt screen as undervalued by up to 40% on cash flow

Simply Wall St has named three US stocks that its discounted cash flow analysis suggests trade up to 40% below fair value: Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and J.B. Hunt Transport Services. The screen is aimed at investors weighing rising fuel costs, inflation, and tighter central bank policy expected in 2027. Wells Fargo, valued at about $248.4 billion, grew average loans 12% and average deposits 10% year over year in the second quarter of 2026 after the asset cap was removed. Bank of America, worth about $357.9 billion, plans to double its AI budget within a $14 billion technology spend. J.B. Hunt, valued at about $22.1 billion, posted record intermodal volume of more than 578,000 loads in the second quarter of 2026. The full screen found 461 more companies.

Bank of America sees 40% upside for Penguin Solutions as AI memory demand grows

Bank of America has started coverage of Penguin Solutions (PENG) with a Buy rating and a $100 price target, 39.7% above the $71.57 share price at the time. Analyst Wamsi Mohan argues that memory, not processing power, is becoming the next constraint in AI. Penguin builds and manages large AI computing clusters and sells memory systems that speed them up. AI-related customers make up 78% of its revenue, the bank says. In its latest quarter, Penguin reported record revenue of $567 million, up 68% from a year earlier. Full-year sales rose 26% to $1.73 billion. Mohan sees fiscal 2028 revenue of $2.87 billion, against a consensus of $2.66 billion. The main risk is a sharp drop in memory prices. Penguin's 10 biggest clients made up 66% of fiscal 2025 revenue.

Johnson Fistel probes Bank of America officers over $1.2B anti-money-laundering penalty

Law firm Johnson Fistel is investigating possible claims against certain officers and directors of Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC) for alleged breaches of fiduciary duty. It is seeking long-term shareholders who held shares before December 2024 and still hold them. On October 13, 2026, the US Treasury Department said its Financial Crimes Enforcement Network had assessed a $1.2 billion penalty against Bank of America, N.A. The bank admitted it willfully violated the Bank Secrecy Act by failing to keep an adequate anti-money-laundering program, conduct due diligence on foreign correspondent accounts, and file suspicious activity reports. A $750 million penalty from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency is credited against the total. On October 14, the company reported a $1.2 billion settlement charge in the third quarter, with net income of $6.9 billion, down from $8.3 billion a year earlier.
