Requirements
  • A degree from a school or college approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association is required.
  • Current Certified Occupational Therapy certification is required.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is required.
Responsibilities
  • Evaluate, plan, direct, and administer occupational therapy treatment modalities prescribed by a licensed physician.
  • Administer occupational therapy treatments and occupational agents to restore function and prevent disability following injury, disease, or physical disability.
  • Assist patients in reaching their maximum performance and level of functioning while learning to live within the limits of their capabilities.
  • Direct the Occupational Therapy Department certified staff, including Occupational Therapy Assistants, Occupational Therapy Aides, Occupational Therapy certification applicants, and Occupational Therapy students.
  • Observe and evaluate treatment effectiveness and recommend changes to the physician when needed.
  • Perform appropriate assessments and reassessments for each patient across neonate, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric, and general patient populations.
  • Formulate teaching plans based on identified learning needs and evaluate their effectiveness, including family education when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency of occupational therapy modalities.
  • Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity and identify and address their psychosocial needs.
  • Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly and maintain department cleanliness and safety.
  • Interact professionally with patients and families and involve them in forming the plan of care.
  • Communicate appropriately and clearly with physicians, staff, and the administrative team.
  • Coordinate and direct patient care to ensure patient needs are met and hospital policy is followed.
  • Maintain records pertinent to personnel and department operations.
  • Maintain documentation in accordance with current standards and policies.
  • Assist with orientation and in-service training for certified department staff and participate in guidance and educational programs.
  • Evaluate certified staff, including interviewing, hiring, evaluating, and terminating employees.
  • Maintain regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission, state, and federal regulations and standards.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Communicate the facility's mission, ethics, and goals and the department's focus statement.
Desired Qualifications
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Basic knowledge of physical medicine, occupational therapy modalities, anatomy and physiology.
  • Basic knowledge of physical therapy machine operation, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Additional languages are preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal skills.
