About the job

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience as a radar engineer, radar systems engineer, or in a similar role, including work with more than one radar type or vendor.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating radars into larger systems such as vehicles, fixed sites, counter-uncrewed aerial systems, air defense, or autonomy, and taking the integration through fielded use.
  • Proven experience tuning radar configuration and processing parameters to improve detection, tracking, and false-alarm performance in real-world clutter and interference.
  • Strong working knowledge of radar principles, including the radar range equation, radar cross section, Doppler processing, constant false alarm rate processing, clutter, multipath, and multi-target tracking such as Kalman filtering and data association.
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python, with the ability to write production-quality code for radar data ingestion and processing on Linux.
  • Ability to diagnose issues across radio-frequency hardware, networking using TCP/UDP, timing, and software layers, and to use lab equipment such as spectrum analyzers and oscilloscopes.
  • Ability to own ambiguous sensor problems end-to-end and spend meaningful time on the range in a fast-moving startup environment.
  • Only U.S. citizens are permitted because the position requires access to export-controlled information under ITAR.
  • Willingness to submit to a background check.
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics, or a related field with a focus on radio frequency, signal processing, or radar.
  • Active security clearance or eligibility to obtain one.
Responsibilities
  • Characterize fielded radars on the bench and range, including frequency-modulated continuous-wave, pulse-Doppler, and electronically scanned array systems, to verify vendor performance claims and establish tuning baselines.
  • Integrate multiple radar models into the counter-drone platform, including mechanical and electrical interfaces, timing and synchronization, coordinate-frame alignment, vendor software development kits, application programming interfaces, and data protocols.
  • Design, build, and maintain software to configure radars and ingest, filter, and publish detections and tracks to the rest of the system reliably and with low latency.
  • Tune radar parameters, including waveform and mode selection, detection thresholds, constant false alarm rate processing, clutter maps, Doppler filtering, and track initiation and maintenance, to maximize detection probability and minimize false alarms against small, fast uncrewed aircraft in real-world environments.
  • Work with perception and controls teams to fuse radar tracks with acoustic and electro-optical/infrared data, and use radar to cue visual tracking and effectors.
  • Build and execute test plans involving simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, and live-flight range testing with uncrewed aircraft pilots, and establish metrics for detection range, track quality, latency, and false-alarm rate.
  • Support radar setup, site surveys, and tuning during customer demonstrations, pilots, and field deployments, troubleshooting issues from the radio-frequency front end through the software stack.
  • Produce and maintain integration documentation, interface control documents, tuning guides, and test reports for internal teams and external partners.
Desired Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience with radars purpose-built for counter-drone or short-range air surveillance, such as Echodyne, Robin Radar, Blighter, RADA, or comparable systems.
  • Experience detecting and classifying Group 1 small uncrewed aircraft, including micro-Doppler signatures and discrimination of drones from birds and ground clutter.
  • Experience with MATLAB or NumPy/SciPy for radar signal and data analysis.
  • Multimodal fusion experience combining radar with electro-optical/infrared, acoustic, or radio-frequency sensors.
  • Experience with ROS/ROS 2, NVIDIA Jetson or other edge compute, FPGAs, or real-time signal-processing pipelines.
  • Familiarity with formats such as ASTERIX, Cursor-on-Target, or SAPIENT for sharing radar tracks with command-and-control systems.
  • Experience in an ITAR or compliance-bound defense environment, or prior work at a defense contractor or with Department of Defense customers.
  • A hobby interest in building robots or engineering projects.

What believers are saying

  • YC said 9 Mothers booked $1.6 million and delivered multiple DoW systems.
  • TechCrunch reported a $35 million contract expansion expected later in 2026.
  • Spotter Global integrated radar into EDDA on 2026-08-24, expanding deployment options.

What critics are saying

  • EDDA faces Anduril Pulsar, DroneShield Mk2, and Epirus HAVOC in 2026.
  • Customer concentration is severe: YC showed $1.6 million DoW sales on 2026-06-05.
  • A failed fielding cycle before 2027 would stall Vor, Atla, and Gleipnir.

What makes 9 Mothers unique

  • 9 Mothers shipped EDDA by 2026-09-22, pairing passive acoustics with visual tracking.
  • The company sells zero-RF, 23kg point defense for Group 1 FPV drones.
  • Russell Smith, Roman Khomenko, and Bogdan Pyzh target hardware-on-software tempo procurement.
