Responsibilities

Flying Wedge Defence reveals first footage of FWD Supreme Lite. New Delhi: Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace (FWDA) today released a video preview of FWD Supreme Lite, its flight technology demonstrator for the company's AI-piloted fighter aircraft programme, marking a significant transition from digital engineering and concept development to a physical aircraft progressing through airframe development, system integration and ground testing. Positioned as the first flying testbed for the wider FWD Supreme family, the approximately 250-kg-class demonstrator is intended to progressively validate the programme's aerodynamic configuration, flight architecture, and key technologies before they are carried over to larger variants. Advancing towards the planned first flight in Q3 2026, the development comes weeks after FWDA announced its Mobbing Doctrine, a proposed new approach to the economics of air combat. Challenging the traditional equation of air power, i.e., relying only on small numbers of increasingly expensive combat aircraft, the doctrine proposes deploying larger numbers of AI-piloted fighter aircraft, creating numerical, tactical and economic asymmetry. The ambition is to combine fighter-like performance, AI-enabled autonomy, and combat mass, potentially changing the cost equation of generating air power and imposing costs on an adversary. Supreme is the aircraft family through which FWDA intends to develop and demonstrate this concept. While speaking about the vision, Suhas Tejaskanda, Founder and CEO, FWDA, said, "The battlefield is moving towards greater autonomy, distributed operations and combat mass; the future will be defined by who will own the algorithms. The Mobbing Doctrine is built around the idea that AI can change that equation by enabling a larger number of capable fighter-class aircraft to operate as a coordinated force. Supreme Lite is our first opportunity to take that thinking out of the digital environment and begin validating it through a real flying aircraft." "Our vision is clear that as a new generation of AI-piloted fighter aircraft begins to emerge in the skies around the world, India should not merely watch that future being developed elsewhere. We should be a part of building it", he further added. The development comes as the global race to build autonomous combat aircraft accelerates. In the United States, Shield AI's X-BAT is progressing towards its first VTOL flight, while Anduril's YFQ-44A Fury is advancing within the U.S. Air Force's Collaborative Combat Aircraft effort. In Germany, Helsing's CA 1 Europa is developing as an advanced, multi-role autonomous uncrewed combat aerial vehicle (UCAV). Designed and manufactured in India, FWD Supreme is an indigenous entry into the emerging AI-piloted fighter race, with an architecture built around its own Mobbing Doctrine rather than simply replicating an existing foreign CCA concept. The Supreme family is also being developed with Rocket Assisted Take-Off (RATO) as a capability under exploration, potentially enabling operations from shorter or austere launch locations and reducing dependence on conventional full-length fighter runways. These capabilities will be progressively developed and validated as the programme matures. With Supreme Lite now moving through ground testing, the programme's next defining milestone is no longer a concept reveal or digital simulation. For the company, the next answer is expected in the sky, with the first flight of FWD Supreme Lite in Q3 2026.

August 17, 2026 - 10:19 am Helsing, the Munich startup that has become Europe's best-funded defence-AI company, is pushing into Asia, and it has found an unlikely guide. The German firm has enlisted Japan's Rakuten, a name better known for e-commerce and mobile phones, to help broker the sale of its unmanned systems to Japan's Ground Self-Defence Forces. At the centre of the effort is the HX-2, a compact AI-guided strike drone that Japan's military is putting through field trials due to run until the end of September. Alongside the drone, Helsing sells AI software for battlefield analysis, underwater surveillance and combat aircraft, the software-first arsenal that has made it one of Europe's most valuable tech firms and a poster child for the continent's rearmament. The conglomerate is positioning itself as a broker that can walk foreign defence startups through Japan's notoriously opaque procurement system, and it has done this before, having helped the Ukrainian drone-software firm Swarmer show its tech to Japanese units. In a market where the paperwork can be as formidable as the competition, a trusted local name is worth a great deal. The timing is deliberate. Japan is in the middle of its biggest military build-up in decades, driven by an increasingly assertive China and a war in Ukraine that has rewritten every assumption about drones, and it eased its long-standing arms-export and procurement rules earlier this year. That has thrown open a market foreign weapons-makers could barely touch before, and Helsing is far from the only one now circling it. Tokyo has committed to lifting defence spending toward levels not seen in the postwar era, and every yen of that budget is a magnet for exactly the kind of autonomous, software-led kit the war in Ukraine has made fashionable. A company built on online shopping and mobile networks recasting itself as a matchmaker for weapons startups is a measure of how far the defence boom has spread beyond the traditional primes, pulling in financiers, cloud providers and consumer-tech names chasing a market suddenly awash with government money. Across Europe and Asia alike, capital and engineers are pouring into anything that promises an edge on a modern battlefield. Founded only in 2021, it raised billions this year, ranks among Europe's most valuable private tech firms, and has become a primary supplier of drones to Ukraine with Berlin's backing. Its pitch, that modern warfare is increasingly won by software and autonomy rather than sheer hardware, has made it the continent's clearest bet that AI belongs at the heart of defence. That reputation is not spotless, though. Earlier this year Ukraine paused further orders of the HX-2 after technical problems in the field, a reminder that the distance between an impressive AI demo and a reliable battlefield weapon can be wide. Japan's own trials, with another month left to run, will be watched closely for exactly that reason. The Japan move also fits a company expanding on every front. Helsing has been building an AI submarine, striking an alliance with Mistral on military AI, and casting itself as a pillar of Europe's scramble to rearm. Selling into Asia extends that ambition well beyond NATO, and quietly turns a European champion into a would-be global arms supplier. Whether the Rakuten partnership converts trials into contracts is still unknown, and Japan remains a cautious buyer with a long procurement memory. But the very fact that a European AI startup barely five years old is testing strike drones for the Japanese army, with an e-commerce giant as its fixer, captures how fast the business of war is being remade, and how eagerly its new players are rushing in.

E-commerce pioneer Rakuten has shifted some of its focus to the sector: It's partnered with a Ukrainian government agency to develop defense technologies, while subsidiary Rakuten Mobile has taken part in joint U.S.-Japan military trials of mobile technologies. Founded in 2021, Munich-based Helsing has gained prominence as a supplier of military software and attack drones following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Last month, Goldman Sachs backed Helsing at a valuation of $18 billion. Helsing's offerings include the AI strike drone HX-2, which touts software that allows it to seek and identify targets without continuous data connectivity. Helsing has not disclosed military contracts outside of its native Germany, although the startup is active in multiple countries. Rakuten shares rose as much as 3.5% in Tokyo on Monday. Japan's Ground Self-Defence Forces are currently testing Helsing's HX-2 strike drone, as Tokyo looks to modernise its military and counter an increasingly assertive China. The field tests will run until the end of September, the spokesperson said. Helsing struck an "initial agreement" for the Japanese government to use its systems earlier this year, a spokesperson for the Munich-based company said, adding that the move was made possible by an unnamed "local brokerage partner". Japan's Ground Self-Defence Forces did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Rakuten's involvement with Helsing was first reported by Japan's Nikkei newspaper. While the Tokyo-based conglomerate has limited defence experience, it is aiming to help more startups break into Japan's defence industry. "Encouraging greater participation for startups in Japan's defense industry presents an important opportunity to strengthen the country's defense capabilities. Startups often face significant structural barriers, including complex procurement systems, difficulties communicating with government agencies and challenging procurement cycles," Hideaki Mukai, Chief of Staff to Rakuten's CEO, said in a statement to Reuters.
