About the job

Requirements
  • A master's or PhD in organic chemistry, chemical biology, biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Industry experience in bioconjugation chemistry, with the ability to independently design, develop, and troubleshoot conjugation workflows.
  • For Staff Scientist: an MS or PhD and at least 8 years of experience with an MS, or at least 6 years with a PhD.
  • For Senior Scientist: an MS or PhD and at least 6 years of experience with an MS, or at least 4 years with a PhD.
  • Deep expertise in protein and/or peptide bioconjugation, including NHS esters, maleimides, click chemistries (CuAAC, SPAAC, IEDDA), isothiocyanate coupling, and related bioorthogonal approaches.
  • Experience with site-specific amino acid sidechain chemistry beyond maleimide chemistry, such as Cys, Lys, Arg, Tyr, Trp, or Asp/Glu, for multistep workflows.
  • A track record developing novel blocking groups and conducting structure–activity relationship (SAR) studies to optimize blocking-group performance and selectivity.
  • Proficiency in analytical characterization, including HPLC method development, LC-MS/MS for conjugate analysis, UV/Vis, and CE.
  • A method-development mindset and a history of building and adapting new chemical approaches rather than executing established protocols.
  • Ability to function as an independent contributor and collaborative partner in a cross-functional team setting.
Responsibilities
  • Partner with sample preparation and assay development teams to screen and select conjugation chemistries for peptides and oligonucleotides that enable single-molecule protein sequencing.
  • Design bioconjugation workflows using NHS-ester chemistry, maleimides, isothiocyanate chemistry, and click chemistry (CuAAC, SPAAC, IEDDA).
  • Prepare bioconjugation reagents to enable studies from proof of concept through prototype kitting.
  • Develop labeling strategies based on Edman chemistry.
  • Develop and apply selective C-terminal and N-terminal conjugation chemistries.
  • Develop site-specific labeling strategies for amino acid sidechains (Cys, Lys, Arg, Tyr, Trp, His, Asp/Glu) on native peptides, and screen protecting groups to enhance amino acid signal in the protein sequencing assay.
  • Enable an on-bead workflow to label and release peptides for interrogation in the sequencing assay.
  • Synthesize and purify peptide and oligonucleotide conjugates for assay testing.
  • Characterize conjugation efficiency, purity, and stability using tools such as HPLC, LC-MS/MS, NMR, CE, UV/Vis, and FTIR.
  • Scale conjugate synthesis from R&D quantities to prototype-grade supply for internal testing, with attention to reproducibility, shelf life, and fit-for-purpose quality.
  • Work cross-functionally with sample preparation, assay integration, and reagent manufacturing teams to troubleshoot conjugation failures and optimize workflows.
  • Contribute to intellectual property development through invention disclosures.
  • Maintain experimental documentation in Confluence and laboratory notebooks, and author and maintain SOPs for new conjugation methods.
Desired Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience with solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), including protecting-group strategies beyond standard Fmoc/Boc and selective on-resin modifications.
  • Experience with peptide C-terminal chemistry manipulation methods such as thioester formation, native chemical ligation, or photoredox/iridium-catalyzed C-terminal labeling.
  • Familiarity with oligonucleotide chemistry and oligo-conjugation techniques, including ITC, phosphoramidite modifications, and click coupling to nucleic acids.
  • Experience with scalable surface chemistry methods for flow cells or solid-phase supports.
  • Familiarity with statistical and design-of-experiments (DOE)-based experimental design for chemistry optimization.
  • Prior experience in an early-stage biotech or tools/diagnostics company.

About the company

Glyphic Biotechnologies

View

Glyphic Biotechnologies is advancing proteomics by building a next-generation protein sequencing platform. The core product is designed to reveal detailed information about proteins, helping researchers and medical institutions gain new insights into biology and disease. The platform supports sequencing services for researchers and may be licensed to other organizations, generating revenue from service fees and licensing agreements. Unlike many competitors that focus on smaller-scale tools, Glyphic emphasizes a first-of-its-kind sequencing capability for proteins, along with diverse deployment options (serving research labs directly and via licensing). The company's goal is to enable deeper understanding of bodily functions through protein data and to bring its sequencing technology to broader use in the life sciences through services and licensing deals.

What believers are saying

  • Greenhouse posted six Berkeley openings on September 4, 2026, signaling active buildout.
  • RTT Health lists Glyphic as partner, showing early external validation in 2026.
  • Company site updated September 2, 2026; operations continue after the reported $38 million Series A.

What critics are saying

  • No commercial product exists; a 2027 platform slip destroys investor patience.
  • Thermo Fisher and Bruker dominate proteomics; Glyphic must beat entrenched workflows.
  • If single-molecule chemistry fails, Glyphic becomes a perpetual R&D story, not a company.

What makes Glyphic Biotechnologies unique

  • Glyphic targets single-molecule protein sequencing, not incremental mass spectrometry improvements.
  • MIT spinout roots and Ed Boyden lineage give credible scientific pedigree.
  • Its Berkeley team still hires assay, chemistry, and proteomics talent in September 2026.
