What believers are saying

  • Small business is accelerating: premiums grew 7% in the April to June 2026 quarter, with double-digit growth from first-time customers.
  • Benefits is scaling: an August 2026 deal for Equitable's benefits unit brings about 300 staff and $500 million in premium.
  • Early-career hires rotate through roles: its leadership development program moves participants across functions, and tuition aid starts on day one.

What critics are saying

  • Older claims are biting: Business Insurance spent 91.4 cents per premium dollar in the June 2026 quarter, up from 87.0.
  • Personal lines are shrinking: auto and home premiums fell 7% to $915 million in the quarter reported July 2026.
  • Expect regular office time: corporate staff have worked on site three days a week since January 2024.

What makes The Hartford unique

  • AARP members are its home market: The Hartford is the only auto and home insurer AARP endorses, through 2033.
  • Small companies are its specialty: The Hartford insures nearly 1.5 million small businesses through dedicated service centers.
  • Workplace leave is its stronghold: LIMRA ranks it first in fully insured disability and paid family leave coverage in force.

Hartford beats revenue estimates by 40% but shares drop 2.6% on disappointing earnings

Despite the top-line beat, the multi-line insurance company missed analysts' book value per share and earnings per share estimates. The Hartford, recognisable by its stag logo dating to 1810, provides property and casualty insurance, group benefits and investment products across the United States. The company delivered the largest analyst estimate beat among multi-line insurance stocks tracked this quarter. However, investors appeared dissatisfied with the results. Hartford Insurance targets cluster around $150 amid underwriting strength and P&C cycle concerns

Hartford Insurance Group has drawn price targets from several research firms clustering around US$150, aligning with a model fair value estimate of US$150.85. Goldman Sachs, Keefe Bruyette, Wells Fargo, Cantor Fitzgerald, Citi, Morgan Stanley and UBS have raised targets to the US$150-160 range, citing confidence in Hartford's underwriting and pricing execution. However, concerns remain about softening property and casualty market conditions. Goldman Sachs and BofA flag increased capital supply and competition pressuring growth, whilst BofA notes loss costs may be rising faster than prices in some lines. Hartford recently joined Centro Benefits' digital quoting ecosystem, opened a technology hub in Columbus, Ohio, and repurchased 3 million shares for US$400 million between October and December 2025.
