About the company

Prilenia develops and commercializes medicines for brain diseases. It focuses on creating treatments for neurodegenerative conditions (like Huntington’s disease and ALS) and neurodevelopmental disorders. Its main candidate is pridopidine, a drug studied to help brain cells by activating the sigma-1 receptor (S1R), which researchers believe can help restore brain pathways impaired in these diseases. The product works by engaging S1R to support neuronal function, with the goal of slowing symptoms or progression once approved. Prilenia aims to stand out by its specific focus on S1R biology, building a pipeline of potential therapies, and bringing these treatments to patients through regulatory approval and commercialization. The company’s goal is to provide validated therapies that address urgent needs for patients and families affected by neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders, while growing its team and expanding its pipeline for future medicines.

What believers are saying

  • PRECISE-HD began July 7, 2026, restoring a path toward Huntington's disease approval.
  • PREVAiLS enrolled its first ALS participant on March 30, 2026, expanding the pipeline.
  • Prilenia appointed Elisabeth Leiderman in April 2026 to manage Phase 3 financing runway.

What critics are saying

  • EMA refused Nurzigma in July 2025, then Prilenia withdrew the filing in November 2025.
  • PRECISE-HD and PREVAiLS still depend on one molecule, pridopidine, for company survival.
  • Any Phase 3 failure in HD or ALS leaves Prilenia without a second clinical asset.

What makes Prilenia unique

  • Pridopidine targets sigma-1 receptor biology across Huntington's disease and ALS programs.
  • Ferrer co-develops and commercializes pridopidine across Europe, MENA, Africa, and Latin America.
  • Prilenia still runs dual Phase 3 programs, unusually broad for a single-asset biotech.

"Prilenia is currently tackling two devastatingly intractable diseases, in HD and ALS, where the unmet need is stark," Munschauer said. "We now have a possibility of changing the course of illness. What drew me here is the clarity of the mission and the pridopidine story, which has already garnered compelling data. My focus will be on execution - running our pivotal HD and ALS studies to the highest standard." Prilenia moving trials forward. In July 2026, Prilenia and Ferrer announced initiation of a confirmatory study of pridopidine in Huntingdon's disease. Munschauer has been principal or co-principal investigator for over 50 Phase I-IV trials in multiple sclerosis and cerebrovascular disease. He has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications.
