  • A Bachelor’s Degree in education.
  • An Alaska Teacher Certificate with a Special Education endorsement.
Responsibilities
  • Implement research-based instructional strategies that support student learning and achievement.
  • Individualize instruction based on students’ learning styles, learning rates, maturation levels, and achievement levels.
  • Serve students with disabilities and gifted and talented students across all grades, including preschool, using varied support services and settings.
  • Maintain and update each special education student’s program and file while protecting confidential information.
  • Follow federal and state requirements for referrals, testing, program development, placement, child-find activities, and paraprofessional training.
  • Complete required paperwork using a web-based system under the supervision of the Director of Student Services.
  • Coordinate meetings and complete paperwork for diagnostic tests, new referrals, currently placed students, and behavioral incidents.
  • Communicate diagnostic and meeting results to staff and parents as appropriate.
  • Plan and conduct ESER and Individualized Education Plan meetings for special education referrals, assessments, and placement processes.
  • Implement each student’s Individualized Education Plan in collaboration with regular education staff and paraprofessionals.
  • Collaborate and schedule with related service providers as needed.
  • Supervise and train a special education teacher aide in providing services to students.
  • Promote and support School District goals established by the Board of Education.
  • Participate in educational committees and organizations for professional growth and promotion of the profession.
  • Develop awareness of local culture to provide bicultural or multicultural instruction responsive to district and community needs.
  • Follow the professional code of ethics and teaching standards adopted by Alaska’s Professional Teaching Practice Commission.
  • Adhere to district policies and regulations.
  • Travel within and outside the North Slope Borough School District, including travel by small and large commuter planes.
  • Perform other tasks and assume additional responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master’s Degree.
  • Three years of experience in education.
  • Experience with Inupiaq language, history, and culture.
  • Experience with students with intensive needs.
  • Experience with students with visual impairments and braille.
