About the job
- A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
- Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification is required within 30 days of employment in the Patient Safety Companion role.
- Must have basic computer skills to use the electronic medical record, electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, and intranet.
- Reliable transportation is required to support assignments between two facilities.
- Must be able to tolerate prolonged standing and walking and perform standing, walking, kneeling, bending, sitting, stooping, lifting, reaching, and emergency running.
- Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly.
- Must be able to work a 12-hour shift and perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range.
- Must be able to work onsite and handle exposure to body fluids, disease, infection, laboratory chemicals, hazardous materials, and cleaning solutions while using required protective equipment.
- Provide personal care services according to the registered nurse's plan of treatment.
- Measure and record patient intake and output, vital signs, oxygen saturation, weight, and height.
- Position, lift, turn, transfer, ambulate, and assist patients with normal range of motion.
- Apply and utilize special equipment, including anti-embolism stockings, sequential compression devices, cardiac monitors, oxygen equipment, and heat and cold appliances.
- Assist patients with bedpans, urinals, commodes, feeding, and other basic care needs.
- Provide pre-operative and post-operative care, perineal care, non-sterile vaginal irrigations, sitz baths, non-medicated enemas, incontinence care, and skin care for immobilized patients.
- Remove Foley catheters, saline locks, and colostomy bags as assigned.
- Perform blood glucose checks and collect, label, and transport laboratory specimens.
- Accurately document care provided according to policies and procedures.
- Apply safety principles during ambulation, transfers, range-of-motion assistance, and positioning.
- Use supplies economically and maintain equipment and nursing units in a clean, safe manner.
- Perform basic care requirements including rounding, AIDET, the 4 Ps, prompt response to patient needs, hand hygiene, and use of two patient identifiers.
- Participate in performance-improvement activities, including serving on teams, assisting with measures, and implementing improvement changes.
- Use electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, intranet, telephone, and texting as required.
- Follow DCH Health System policies, procedures, employee handbook requirements, and behavioral standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Previous patient care experience.
