About the job

Requirements
  • Strong Android development background in Java or Kotlin, including the ability to review Android pull requests and assess their architecture and design.
  • Experience governing or managing an external mobile development partner as the technical authority over a team that is not a direct report.
  • Understanding of Android app release management, including Play Store submission, staged rollouts, feature flags, and crash monitoring.
  • Experience with mobile API design, including REST APIs optimized for mobile consumption, offline support, and low-bandwidth environments.
  • At least 7 years of software engineering experience, including at least 2 years as the de facto technical authority for a significant product area or team.
  • Strong backend engineering fundamentals in distributed systems, event-driven architecture, API design, database design, and testing strategy.
  • Ability to review and reason about code across the full stack of the role's domain and provide meaningful reviews on squad pull requests.
  • Experience in an Agile/Scrum or Kanban environment, driving sprint ceremonies, backlog refinement, and delivery alongside a Product Owner.
  • Use AI and large language model tools actively in daily engineering work, including code generation, test writing, documentation, and debugging.
  • Use GitHub for all code, mandatory peer review, a unified branching strategy, and green continuous integration before merge.
  • Document APIs with OpenAPI/Swagger and record significant decisions in Architecture Decision Records.
  • Keep secrets out of code using AWS Secrets Manager or Vault, and demonstrate awareness of the OWASP Top 10.
Responsibilities
  • Own all architecture decisions for Android app development, review all pull requests, and provide final sign-off on every release.
  • Own the backend API serving the Android app, including its design and maintenance.
  • Own the Android app release process and quality assurance strategy, including release cadence, feature flag strategy, staged rollout, and rollback procedures.
  • Own digital experience features delivered through the app and coordinate cross-squad features and dependencies with Device Management Engineering, Payment Engineering, Messaging Engineering, and other squads.
  • Build internal mobile engineering capability and develop Android expertise to improve the app experience for clients.
  • Own technical architecture for the squad's domain, including system design, API contracts, data models, integration patterns, and Architecture Decision Records.
  • Enforce engineering standards within the squad, including GitHub use, mandatory pull request review, coverage gates, OpenAPI documentation, runbooks, and secrets management.
  • Represent the squad to Platform General Architecture, escalate cross-squad concerns, contribute to shared standards, and align squad patterns with broader platform direction.
  • Review and approve all squad pull requests and act as the quality gate for work that ships.
  • Define and maintain the squad's Definition of Done and work with the embedded quality assurance engineer to build quality into delivery.
  • Own the squad's release process and sign off on releases, including work from external partners where applicable.
  • Drive sprint planning with the Product Owner by translating user stories into technical tasks, surfacing dependencies, and flagging risks early.
  • Act as the technical point of accountability for external partners; own architecture decisions, code quality, and release timing for partner-delivered work.
  • Review partner code through pull request access and prevent unreviewed partner work from entering production.
  • Manage 4–6 direct reports for day-to-day work, typically backend engineers, frontend/mobile engineers, and quality assurance engineers; the quality assurance Chapter Lead reports operationally to this role.
  • Unblock engineers by pairing on difficult problems, reviewing designs before implementation, and fostering a fast, supportive environment for asking for help.
  • Give direct, timely feedback to direct reports and take primary responsibility for the development of engineers in the squad.
  • Provide significant input into performance reviews and hiring decisions for squad engineers.
  • Model active use of AI and large language model tools in engineering work.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in fintech, payments, or digital financial services in Africa, Latin America, or APAC.
  • Experience governing external engineering partners or SaaS vendor integrations.
  • Hands-on experience with Java backend development.
  • Familiarity with event-driven architecture and Kafka or equivalent message brokers.

Founded in 2015, Watu operates in 10 countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria, and Mexico. The company reports originating over 7 million loans since inception, focusing on mobility and connectivity assets for underserved customers. The facility builds on a financing relationship dating back to 2022. It follows AHL's recent second close of its Africa Credit Fund I, which raised $45.5 million toward a $70 million target.
