About the job

Requirements
  • A PhD in Physics, Medical Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field is required.
  • At least 2 years of experience in radiation-therapy system research and development, beam dosimetry, accelerator physics, or related fields.
  • A strong foundation in dosimetry physics, radiation physics, and medical physics is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform high-accuracy measurements, analyze data quantitatively, and assess uncertainties is required.
  • Demonstrated experience performing Monte Carlo radiation-transport calculations for hardware development, such as collimation, shielding, or leakage analysis, using Geant4 or an equivalent tool is required.
  • Technical rigor, critical thinking, and sound physics judgment, especially in safety- and compliance-critical work, are required.
  • Clear written and verbal communication of complex physics concepts is required.
Responsibilities
  • Own and execute dosimetry and radiation-physics analyses supporting beam performance, safety, and compliance.
  • Translate clinical medical-physics principles into physics-based requirements, acceptance criteria, and verification methods.
  • Design and perform high-accuracy radiation measurements using ion chambers, solid-state detectors, films, and arrays, with strong uncertainty discipline.
  • Apply radiation transport modeling, analytical and/or Monte Carlo, to understand dose, collimation, scatter, leakage, and shielding.
  • Produce clear, traceable physics conclusions suitable for QMS, IEC verification, and regulatory review.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and regulatory partners to close physics risks early.
Desired Qualifications
  • Applied radiation-transport expertise in shielding, collimation, and beam modeling for x-ray, electron, and secondary radiation fields, with connections between simulation and measurement.
  • Clinical medical-physics intuition, such as LINAC commissioning, quality assurance, or end-to-end dosimetric validation, and understanding of patient-dose implications.
  • Disciplined use of Monte Carlo and analytical methods, validating models against data rather than treating simulation as a black box.
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills using Python, MATLAB, Excel, or similar tools, with emphasis on uncertainty evaluation and defensible conclusions.
  • System-level beam understanding, including familiarity with beam generation, monitoring and control, treatment-planning systems, and source/beam modeling assumptions.
  • Evidence of technical leadership or innovation, such as publications, patents, conference contributions, or impactful internal technical work demonstrating rigor and ownership.

About the company

Varian, part of Siemens Healthineers, focuses on oncology by providing integrated radiation oncology solutions that combine software, hardware, patient data, and care teams. Its offerings include treatment-planning software, radiation therapy machines, and data-management systems that work together to enable precise cancer treatments. The company differentiates itself through an integrated platform approach and services like Oncology-as-a-Service (OaaS), which lets healthcare providers adopt advanced radiation oncology with ongoing service support rather than large upfront investments. Varian serves healthcare providers such as hospitals and cancer centers, helping them deliver coordinated care and improve patient outcomes. Its goal is to reduce the fear of cancer by using data and technology to support clinicians in delivering effective treatments.

What believers are saying

  • ARPA-H awarded Varian up to $60 million in April 2026 for FLASH-RT.
  • FDA cleared TrueBeam for osteoarthritis in March 2026, opening a non-cancer market.
  • Telix collaboration and 2026 AI approvals expand Varian's clinical and software pipeline.

What critics are saying

  • RaySearch enabled online adaptive TrueBeam workflows in Belgium in May 2026, eroding software differentiation.
  • Elekta still attacks Varian's lead in adaptive radiotherapy and premium MR-guided care.
  • If FLASH and non-oncology bets fail by 2028, Varian becomes a commoditized linear-accelerator vendor.

What makes Varian unique

  • Siemens Healthineers gives Varian imaging, radiotherapy, and capital-sales integration globally.
  • Varian's 2026 CE-marked Eclipse AI contouring deepens workflow lock-in across planning.
  • TrueBeam, Halcyon, and Ethos create an installed-base moat hospitals rarely replace.

Siemens Healthineers secures $83M to develop photon Flash radiotherapy for cancer treatment

Siemens Healthineers has received up to $60 million from the US Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health to develop photon Flash radiotherapy, with the company contributing an additional $23 million, totalling $83 million over five years. Flash photon therapy delivers radiotherapy more than 100 times faster than current technologies, aiming to reduce side effects and improve healthy tissue sparing. Unlike proton and electron beam platforms, which face scalability challenges, photon beams are the standard of care for over 50% of cancer patients. The project will build on existing C-arm linear accelerators to enable broader clinical access. Siemens Healthineers aims to transition ultra-high dose rate radiotherapy from experimental treatment into global standard of care within the five-year timeframe.

Varian TrueBeam gets FDA clearance for low-dose radiotherapy to treat osteoarthritis

Siemens Healthineers has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its Varian TrueBeam radiotherapy systems to treat medically refractory osteoarthritis in adults using low-dose radiation therapy. This marks the first expansion of Varian's radiotherapy platform beyond cancer care into chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Osteoarthritis affects over 33 million adults in the US and approximately 600 million globally. The clearance covers TrueBeam, TrueBeam STx, VitalBeam and Edge systems, offering patients with persistent pain a non-invasive outpatient treatment option that targets inflammation, reduces pain and improves joint function. The approval builds on Varian's previous regulatory clearances for non-oncological indications, including radiosurgery treatment for medically refractory essential tremor. The TrueBeam platform combines high-resolution imaging with precise dose control whilst maintaining streamlined clinical workflows.

Telix and Varian enter research collaboration

Telix and Varian enter research collaboration. Telix Pharmaceuticals and Siemens Healthineers' company Varian have agreed to develop novel clinical applications that combine Telix's theranostics products and Varian's external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) technology. The first area of focus will be in identifying opportunities to use Telix's prostate cancer PET imaging agents in selecting patients for EBRT, developing personalized treatment plans (particularly in the context of Varian's Ethos adaptive radiotherapy system), and monitoring responses to treatment, Telix said. The agreement supports both company-sponsored and investigator-led clinical studies. Varian is a key player in EBRT and working with the company will allow Telix to explore how theranostics can be used more effectively by radiation oncologists to enhance patient selection and deliver targeted treatment, Telix noted.
