5 Sentara hospitals ranked best in Hampton Roads by U.S. News & World Report. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital ranked No. 1 in Hampton Roads, No. 3 in Virginia Eight Sentara hospitals have earned rankings in U.S. News & World Report's 2026 Best Hospitals report, with Sentara Norfolk General Hospital leading the way as No. 1 in Hampton Roads and No. 3 in Virginia. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is a regional Level I trauma and burn center, and a tertiary referral center for complex patients transferred from community hospitals for higher levels of care. It is the primary teaching hospital for Eastern Virginia Medical School at Old Dominion University, and home base for the Sentara Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance. The hospital also received high-performance rankings for medical specialties, including No. 1 in Hampton Roads and No. 2 in Virginia for cancer care, No. 1 in Hampton Roads and No. 3 in Virginia for surgery, No. 1 in Hampton Roads for rehabilitation, and No. 1 in Hampton Roads and No. 3 in Virginia for cardiology and heart and vascular surgery. It is also the only organ transplant program in Hampton Roads, offering heart, kidney, and pancreas transplants. It was the first of three Sentara hospitals to install refrigerated food lockers outside their emergency departments in partnership with local non-profits, allowing patients and residents with food insecurity to access healthy food 24 hours a day using digital codes. U.S. News & World Report began publishing hospital rankings in 1990 to help patients make informed choices about their providers. Rankings are developed from publicly available hospital performance data, such as Medicare claims, as well as expert opinion. Sentara hospitals receive national recognition for stroke care quality. Eleven hospitals earn American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines(R) awards for commitment to life-saving care For the past eight years, Sentara Health has partnered with the American Heart Association (AHA) through the Get With The Guidelines(R) program, an initiative dedicated to improving patient outcomes by applying the latest evidence-based research, clinical guidelines, and performance measurement tools. This year, 11 Sentara hospitals were recognized by the AHA for providing outstanding stroke care throughout Virginia and northeast North Carolina. Each hospital earned a Gold Plus award for sustained excellence in stroke care, consistently following the latest stroke treatment guidelines and achieving positive patient outcomes for two or more consecutive calendar years. In addition, Sentara Albemarle Medical Center received the Rural Stroke Silver award, recognizing rural hospitals that meet program standards for four consecutive quarters, or one full year. These awards aim to address disparities in healthcare outcomes, as rural populations face higher risks of stroke mortality and heart disease compared to urban populations. Infosys has partnered with Sentara to build a foundation for AI development across hospital operations, IT, and clinical support. The collaboration, announced on 24 June, aims to enhance efficiency, support clinicians, and improve patient experiences. Infosys will deploy its Topaz Fabric platform, an agentic services suite designed to help Sentara scale AI use cases from pilot programmes to full production across enterprise systems. The approach will help the not-for-profit healthcare organisation prioritise high-value use cases and evolve AI capabilities across business operations. Sentara Obici gets an A in social responsibility. Sentara Obici Hospital earned an A for social responsibility in the 2026-27 Lown Institute Hospitals Index, joining 10 other Sentara hospitals that also earned A grades. Sentara Obici Hospital received an A grade for social responsibility in the 2026-27 Lown Institute Hospitals Index, placing the Suffolk hospital among 11 Sentara hospitals to earn the top grade in that category, according to a Sentara news release. The Lown Institute ranked Sentara Obici No. 383 nationally out of 2,689 hospitals and No. 23 in Virginia out of 69 hospitals for social responsibility. The ranking measures hospitals across health equity, value and patient outcomes, according to the index. Sentara Obici, a 175-bed hospital on Godwin Boulevard in Suffolk, serves Western Tidewater and offers services including emergency care, behavioral health, maternity care, heart and vascular care, orthopedics and imaging, according to Sentara. The Lown Institute also gave Obici an A for value and an A for outcomes. The hospital received a B in equity, according to the institute's hospital profile. Across the system, 11 Sentara hospitals earned an A for social responsibility, up from 10 last year, the release said. The list included Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Sentara CarePlex Hospital, Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital, Sentara Leigh Hospital, Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, Sentara Obici Hospital, Sentara RMH Medical Center, Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital and Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center. Sentara Healthcare, as listed by the Lown Index, ranked No. 41 nationally out of 331 hospital systems for social responsibility and No. 3 nationally for outcomes.
