- Obtain one accepted laboratory credential within one year after hire: American Association of Bioanalyst MT(AAB), American Medical Technologist MT(AMT), American Society for Clinical Pathology MT(ASCP) or MB(ASCP), National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel CLS(NCA), or an equivalent categorical registration in blood banking, chemistry, cytometry, hematology, medical laboratory science, microbiology, or molecular biology.
- Knowledge of laboratory and experimental protocols and procedures.
- Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and the chemical processes and transformations they undergo.
- Knowledge of plant and animal organisms, including their tissues and cells and how they interact with one another and the environment.
- Analytical skills.
- Skills in using personal computers and related software applications.
- Ability to analyze, verify, and manipulate clinical and laboratory data.
- Ability to work under precise quantity and quality requirements and follow safety considerations in environments involving biohazardous conditions, radiation exposure, blood-borne pathogens, fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
- Ability to perform the physical activities required by the role, including occasional lifting and carrying of up to 50 pounds, bending, crouching or stooping, pushing and pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, twisting, and walking.
- Conduct clinical laboratory tests and analyses in hematology, microbiology, immunology, clinical chemistry, and urinalysis.
- Analyze biological material samples for chemical content or reaction.
- Conduct chemical analyses of body fluids to determine the presence of normal and abnormal components.
- Cultivate and isolate microbial organisms, assist in identifying them, and conduct tests on them.
- Obtain, cut, stain, and mount biological material on slides for microscopic study and diagnosis.
- Select and prepare specimens and media for cell culture using aseptic technique.
- Study blood samples to determine cell counts, cell morphology, blood group type, and compatibility for transfusion purposes.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain spectrophotometers, calorimeters, flame photometers, and computer-controlled analyzers used in quantitative and qualitative analysis.
- Promote safety, environmental, and infection-control practices.
