JW Marriott launches first-ever all-inclusive resort at Costa Elena Guanacaste Costa Rica 2026.

JW Marriott launches first-ever all-inclusive resort at Costa Elena Guanacaste Costa Rica 2026. JW Marriott breaks brand precedent with the opening of Costa Elena Resort & Spa, the first all-inclusive property in the brand's global portfolio, featuring 415 rooms in Guanacaste. By Kunal K Choudhary October 07, 2026 Image generated by AI Imagine arriving at Playa El Jobo, where the typical "all-inclusive" buffet is replaced by a seven-course regional tasting menu and a private swim-out suite. For travelers booking the newly opened JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa, the experience shifts from standard package tourism to a curated luxury immersion in the heart of Guanacaste. Plan Trips A global first for JW Marriott in Guanacaste. The hospitality landscape in Costa Rica has shifted with the debut of the JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa. This opening is a strategic anomaly for the brand, marking the very first time JW Marriott has implemented an all-inclusive model anywhere in the world. Situated on the northern Pacific coast, the property is designed to pivot away from the high-volume feel of traditional all-inclusives, focusing instead on "mindful" luxury and indigenous cultural integration. The architectural narrative of the resort is rooted in the Bribri and Cabécar traditions, specifically the story of Sibú, the creator deity. This influence is visible in the open-air layouts and the use of local materials, including a massive handcrafted walnut installation in the main lobby. By blending high-capacity inventory with villa-style privacy, the resort aims to capture the growing market of affluent travelers seeking wellness-centric vacations. Property specifications and amenities. The scale of the Costa Elena property is significant, designed to function as a self-contained destination while maintaining a connection to the Nicoya Peninsula's reputation for longevity. | Feature | Specification | Details | | Total Room Count | 415 | Includes guestrooms, Mindful Suites, and Presidential Suites | | Swimming Pools | 17 | Including an oceanfront infinity pool and semi-private swim-outs | | Dining Venues | 15 | Mix of Costa Rican, Japanese, Italian, and Mexican concepts | | Wellness Space | 16,000 sq. ft. Spa by JW, Fitness Centre, and the first Mindfulness House | | Event Space | 9,000+ sq. ft. Oceanfront ballroom and various outdoor venues | | Exclusive Tier | Griffin Club | Private lounge, dedicated concierge, and private beach access | Your rights as a luxury traveler. When booking high-value all-inclusive packages at international resorts, passengers and guests often overlook the contractual protections governing their stay. Whether you are flying into Liberia (LIR) or San José (SJO) to reach Guanacaste, your rights are split between transit law and hospitality contracts. Flight Protections to Costa Rica: If your journey to the resort is disrupted, your rights depend on the carrier. For those flying from the EU or UK, EU261/2004 provides strict compensation for cancellations or delays over three hours, provided the cause is not "extraordinary circumstances." For US-based travelers, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) mandates full refunds for significantly changed flights, regardless of the ticket's "non-refundable" status. Track Flights Hospitality and Booking Rights: Under standard luxury hospitality frameworks, "all-inclusive" does not mean "unlimited without restriction." Guests should review the specific Terms and Conditions regarding: * The Griffin Club: Ensure that "priority access" is contractually defined to avoid disputes over availability. * Cancellation Policies: High-end resorts often have stricter windows (30-60 days) for full refunds compared to standard hotels. * Package Inclusions: Verify if "all-inclusive" covers the private yacht excursions and deep-sea fishing mentioned in the resort's offerings, as these are frequently tiered as "add-ons." Rebooking and arrival strategy. For travelers planning a visit to the JW Marriott Costa Elena, the logistical approach to Guanacaste is as important as the stay itself. Transit Options: The most efficient route is flying into Guanacaste Airport (LIR). To monitor real-time flight status and avoid surprises upon arrival, utilize FlightAware to track your incoming aircraft. If your flight is canceled, do not rely solely on the airline's automated system; check for alternative carriers serving the LIR route, such as United, Delta, or JetBlue. Book Flights * Pre-Arrival Customization: If booking the Griffin Club, submit your wellness and dining preferences at least 14 days prior to arrival to ensure the personalized experience is locked in. * Wellness Scheduling: The 16,000-square-foot wellness center and the Mindfulness House will be high-demand areas. Book sound baths and cacao ceremonies immediately upon confirmation of your stay. * Local Integration: While the resort offers a weekly night market, Nomadlawyer suggest arranging a private guide to explore the Nicoya Peninsula to experience the authentic "Blue Zone" lifestyle beyond the resort gates. FAQ: JW Marriott Costa Elena 2026. Is this a standard all-inclusive resort? No. Unlike traditional buffet-style resorts, this property uses 15 distinct dining concepts, including specialized wood-fired coastal cooking and Japanese teppanyaki, focusing on a "garden-to-plate" philosophy via the on-site JW Garden. What makes the Griffin Club different from a standard room? The Griffin Club acts as a hotel-within-a-hotel, providing a private lounge, a dedicated concierge, a private beach area, and priority reservations for the resort's 15 dining venues. Are the wellness activities included in the all-inclusive price? While basic access is typically included, specialized treatments at the Spa by JW or guided Reiki and sound sessions in the Mindfulness House may carry additional fees. Check your specific booking tier. How do I get to the resort from the airport? The resort is located in Guanacaste. The closest major airport is Liberia (LIR). Nomadlawyer recommend arranging a private transfer through the resort's concierge to ensure a seamless transition to Playa El Jobo. A bold pivot for a legacy brand, redefining the all-inclusive experience through the lens of Costa Rican wellness. Related travel guides. Disclaimer. Who uses Extended Stay hotels?

Who uses Extended Stay hotels? The customer is not necessarily a tourist enjoying a very long vacation. Extended stay hotels can accommodate construction workers, engineers, consultants, medical professionals, airline and logistics employees, government contractors, film crews and employees on temporary assignments. People relocating to a new city are another important market. So are families between homes, homeowners undergoing major renovations, and people requiring temporary accommodation after fire, flooding or other insured damage. Remote workers and digital nomads add another potential customer. The common denominator is simple: they need somewhere to live temporarily rather than merely somewhere to sleep tonight. The location of Choice's 600th property close to Denver International Airport demonstrates this demand model. Choice itself points to healthcare, logistics, construction, infrastructure projects and major employment centers as generators of extended stay business. Who competes with Choice hotels in Extended Stay? Almost every major U.S. hotel group now wants part of the market. Choice's own portfolio consists of: * Everhome Suites - positioned in midscale extended stay. * WoodSpring Suites - Choice's economy extended stay product. * MainStay Suites - a midscale extended stay brand. * Suburban Studios - an economy extended stay and conversion-oriented brand. But the competitive field is enormous. * Marriott International competes with Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites and Element and has added StudioRes to pursue the affordable midscale extended stay market. * Hilton operates Homewood Suites and Home2 Suites and has introduced LivSmart Studios. * IHG Hotels & Resorts has Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites. * Hyatt operates Hyatt House and has entered further into the category with Hyatt Studios. * Wyndham Hotels & Resorts has ECHO Suites Extended Stay by Wyndham, Hawthorn Extended Stay by Wyndham and WaterWalk Extended Stay by Wyndham. * Sonesta competes through Sonesta ES Suites and Sonesta Simply Suites. * Then there are specialists such as Extended Stay America, My Place Hotels, InTown Suites, LivAway Suites, stayAPT Suites and Studio 6. Choice itself identifies Candlewood Suites, Home2 Suites, TownePlace Suites and Extended Stay America Premier Suites among Everhome's principal competitors, along with newer entrants StudioRes, LivSmart and LivAway. At the economy end, the Extended Stay Lodging Association's industry segmentation also includes operators such as Affordable Suites of America, Budget Suites and HomeTowne Studios, together with independent properties. In other words, this is no longer a niche corner of the lodging industry. Marriott and Hilton already have huge Extended Stay networks. Choice's 600-property announcement needs some perspective. According to recently compiled industry data based on hotel-company disclosures, Marriott ended 2025 with 937 Residence Inn properties and 571 TownePlace Suites properties, in addition to Element and the emerging StudioRes brand. Hilton had 865 Home2 Suites and 559 Homewood Suites properties at the end of 2025. The numbers are particularly interesting when occupancy is considered. Industry analysis of Hilton franchise disclosure data puts 2025 occupancy at approximately 78% for Home2 Suites and 78.9% for Homewood Suites. Extended stays of five nights or longer represented approximately 42% of Home2 room nights and 48% at Homewood. That helps explain why hotel companies keep creating extended stay brands. A guest who doesn't leave tomorrow can be very valuable. How do Extended Stay hotels market themselves? Hotel companies rarely tell consumers about reduced housekeeping costs or efficient labor models. Instead, they sell one powerful concept: Look across extended stay marketing and similar phrases repeatedly appear: apartment-style living, settle in, stay your way, room to live, fully equipped kitchens and home-like accommodation. * Choice describes Everhome Denver Airport as offering "apartment-style living" where guests can cook, work and unwind. * Hyatt House emphasizes apartment-style suites. * Home2 Suites promotes flexible living spaces and in-room kitchens. * Candlewood Suites focuses on longer-term living, kitchens and the ability for guests to maintain their own schedules. The language matters. A traditional hotel sells a room. Extended stay increasingly sells a temporary home. Independent providers may be Choice's most fragmented competitor. Choice is not competing only with Marriott, Hilton or Wyndham. A traveler searching for somewhere to live for six weeks may never search for an "extended stay hotel" at all. They might search: * "furnished apartment Denver monthly" * "serviced apartment near Denver Airport" * "corporate housing Denver" * "monthly accommodation Denver" * "aparthotel Denver" or simply: "where to stay in Denver for three months." That opens the competitive market to independent serviced apartments, corporate housing providers, local aparthotels, furnished residential apartments and smaller independent hotels offering weekly or monthly rates. These businesses may lack the loyalty programs and global reservation systems of Marriott, Hilton or Choice. But they can compete on space, kitchens, location, flexibility and price. Extended Stay hotels vs. Serviced apartments: what's the difference? Sometimes, surprisingly little. The terminology depends partly on geography. "Extended stay hotel" is particularly established in North America. In Europe, Asia and other international markets, travelers may be more familiar with terms such as serviced apartment, aparthotel, apartment hotel or hotel residence. A serviced apartment generally emphasizes residential living and may provide more space, separate bedrooms and household equipment. An extended stay hotel may retain more obvious hotel characteristics, such as a front desk, hotel loyalty program, standardized brand and hotel-style common areas.
