About the Job

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of professional backend software engineering experience, including substantial time building and operating production systems at scale.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, Go, or Java, and comfort picking up other languages.
  • Solid understanding of authentication and authorization concepts, including session management, tokens, multi-factor authentication, and OAuth2/OIDC fundamentals.
  • Solid understanding of REST API design, HTTP fundamentals, and service-to-service communication patterns.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud services, including databases, queues, caches, and serverless compute; AWS is preferred.
  • Experience deploying and operating services on container orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes.
  • Proven ability to lead technical discussions, author design documents, and drive decisions across teams.
  • Strong debugging and observability skills, including structured logging, metrics, and distributed tracing.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead architecture decisions, author RFCs and ADRs, and drive the long-term evolution of the platform. Influence outcomes across the team and with cross-functional partners without relying on direct authority.
  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable backend microservices. Own complex features end-to-end, from design through implementation, testing, and production operation.
  • Treat security as a first-class design constraint, reason in threat models, identify risks at the design stage, and establish patterns the team can apply consistently.
  • Build and maintain infrastructure-as-code for cloud-managed resources, including databases, caches, message queues, and event streaming services.
  • Own production health of the services built. Define SLOs, write structured logs, author runbooks, and participate in an on-call rotation.
  • Mentor and sponsor mid-level and senior engineers through design reviews, pairing, and feedback, and contribute to improving the people around the role.
  • Partner with Security, Product, Data Privacy, and Infrastructure teams, translating cross-functional requirements into well-designed, maintainable technical solutions.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience building or operating customer identity and access management platforms at scale.
  • Familiarity with fine-grained authorization concepts such as ReBAC, ABAC, and policy-based access control.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tooling such as Terraform, Pulumi, or similar.
  • Familiarity with privacy-aware system design and the engineering implications of GDPR or CCPA.
  • Prior involvement in a system ownership transition or platform migration.
  • Background in automotive, Internet of Things, or connected consumer product companies.

About the Company

Rivian

Makes electric pickups, SUVs and delivery vans

Rivian designs and builds electric pickup trucks, SUVs, and delivery vans, pairing off-road ability with electronics and software it develops itself. In 2021, its R1T became the first fully electric pickup truck on the US consumer market, ahead of larger rivals such as Ford and Tesla. It makes the R1T pickup, the R1S and R2 SUVs, and commercial vans in Normal, Illinois, and sells them directly online and in its own stores rather than through dealers. Its vehicles run on Rivian's own software, which gains features through updates sent over the internet, and most revenue comes from vehicle sales, with service and optional software adding more. Rivian was founded in 2009 and is based in Irvine, California.
