Requirements
  • A High School or GED diploma is required.
  • Previous experience as a receptionist and/or in a WIC program is required.
  • The ability to work efficiently and with self-direction is required.
  • The ability to deal patiently and empathetically with multicultural clientele, including under stressful conditions, is required.
  • The ability to work cooperatively as a member of the health care team is required.
  • Writing skills sufficient to communicate with Registered Dietitians, WIC Clerks, Nutrition Assistants, the WIC Coordinator, and WIC participants are required.
  • The ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals is required.
  • The ability to understand written, oral, diagram, or schedule instructions is required.
  • A TB test must be maintained annually.
  • Basic Life Support CPR must be obtained within 90 days of hire and maintained throughout employment.
  • Pre-hire and annual employee health screening is required.
  • An annual influenza vaccine is required, subject to approved medical or religious exemptions.
  • The employee must sign a permanent confidentiality oath covering patient-related information.
  • The employee must pass a Washington State Patrol background check.
  • The employee must be able to perform the stated physical requirements, including extended sitting at a computer terminal, manual handling, reaching, speaking, hearing, and the specified vision abilities.
Responsibilities
  • Greet and schedule WIC, MSS, and medical appointments while considering programmatic and client needs.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with WIC guidelines, assess client needs and preferences, and obtain interpreters as needed.
  • Assist with WIC and nutrition participant prescreening, enrollment, orientation, and reevaluation.
  • Distribute required forms or surveys to clients.
  • Provide care appropriate to the ages of patients served and apply principles of growth and development across the life span.
  • Identify and categorize patients according to age-specific needs, including infants, adolescents, and geriatric patients.
  • Conduct preliminary applicant screening by telephone or in person.
  • Maintain the applicant waiting list according to nutrition risk code during maximum caseload enrollment.
  • Issue appropriate WIC food packages, identify contracted food vendors, issue manual or computerized food benefits, and document benefits issued.
  • Maintain complete and current WIC charts and statistics, including the birth outcome log, schedules, and nutrition encounters.
  • File program-maintenance information accurately and on time.
  • Triage client issues to the appropriate WIC personnel.
  • Provide brief nutritional counseling, breastfeeding and formula-use encouragement, and information about other Sea Mar services.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Nutrition/WIC department and clinic and community services, making appropriate referrals.
  • Perform daily and end-of-month activities, including sending WIC warning and termination letters, making reminder calls, following up on failed appointments, and compiling monthly statistics.
  • Document vendor and participant complaints and infractions and report trends to the Front Office Certifier Supervisor and WIC Coordinator.
  • Attend selected clinic and WIC meetings and participate in continuing education and local agency staff in-service meetings.
  • Assist with breastfeeding promotion and community nutrition education as needed.
  • Provide front-desk switchboard relief when assigned.
  • Ensure timely, friendly, effective, and quality service from reception through provider services.
Desired Qualifications
  • Computer experience is desirable.
  • Bilingual and bicultural ability in English and Spanish or English and Russian is preferred.
  • Interest and experience in basic nutrition and childhood development is desirable.
