Requirements
  • A Master's degree in Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field is required.
  • Rhode Island licensure as LICSW, LCSW, LMHC, LMHC-A, LMFT, LMFT-A, or LCDP is required; certification as Principal Counselor or Counselor is accepted in lieu of licensure.
  • A valid driver's license, vehicle registration, current inspection sticker, and insured automobile are required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform initial screening, intake and assessment, orientation, crisis intervention, counseling, screening, case management, client education, referral, treatment planning, and consultation for clients in the program.
  • Perform a comprehensive psychosocial assessment of assigned consumers.
  • Perform calmly and professionally during crisis or emergency situations.
  • Apply knowledge of psychiatric diagnosis (DSM-IV).
  • Perform and record mental status examinations.
  • Assess clinical emergencies, including suicide risk and danger to others.
  • Collect pertinent data from appropriate collateral sources in accordance with confidentiality guidelines.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with The Providence Center policy and legal requirements.
  • Develop and present, verbally and in writing, a clear clinical formulation based on behavioral data and relevant theory while incorporating psychosocial and family issues.
  • Use psychiatric consultation and intervention when clinically appropriate.
  • Provide individual, group, and family mental health and/or substance abuse therapy.
  • Identify specific therapeutic interventions appropriate for specific problems.
  • Provide brief psychotherapy when appropriate.
  • Provide group therapy.
  • Use knowledge to decide appropriate levels of care and refer consumers to various points in the continuum of care.
  • Collaborate with other providers, agencies, and individuals in consumers' networks of care.
  • Perform record keeping in accordance with Health Information Services and other The Providence Center requirements.
  • Attend trainings, case presentations, and conferences.
  • Attend mandatory in-service training and other training required for licensure renewal.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with Center staff, consumers, community agencies, and the public.
  • Serve on appropriate Center committees.
  • Provide mental health consultation to other community agencies.
  • Perform related duties as requested to support departmental goals.
Desired Qualifications
  • LICSW or LMHC licensure is preferred.
  • Experience providing substance abuse treatment is preferred.
  • Bilingual Spanish is preferred.

Care New England cuts 30+ leadership jobs to close $20M budget gap

Care New England is cutting more than 30 leadership and non-clinical positions to address a projected $20 million budget deficit for fiscal year 2026. The announcement comes as hospitals nationwide face financial pressures from federal Medicaid funding changes and policy overhauls. CEO Dr Michael Wagner cited uncompetitive state reimbursement rates compared with neighbouring states as factors hindering staff recruitment and retention. The health system, Rhode Island's second-largest hospital operator, employs over 8,000 people across Butler, Kent and Women & Infants hospitals. Care New England has faced ongoing financial challenges, exacerbated during the pandemic. A proposed 2022 merger with competitor Lifespan was blocked by regulators on anti-trust grounds. The company spent more than $10.8 million on executive compensation in fiscal 2024.
