The award supports innovative, high-impact research aimed at advancing the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer. The project reflects CDMRP's commitment to accelerating transformative discoveries that may improve outcomes for individuals affected by breast cancer. The award recognizes the scientific merit, innovation, and collaborative strength of the research teams led by Dr. Katerina Gurova at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and Dr. Karsten Eastman at Sethera Therapeutics. Sethera Therapeutics has developed a polymacrocyclic peptide (pMCP) discovery platform designed to discover and engineer constrained peptide molecules with differentiated architectures and chemistries. The technology was first developed at the University of Utah with NIH support and licensed exclusively to Sethera Therapeutics. The pMCP platform offers a new approach for pursuing difficult biological targets that have been challenging for conventional drug modalities. Polymacrocyclic Peptides for Mutant p53-Driven Breast Cancer The collaborative breast cancer project focuses on one of the most common and difficult problems in cancer biology: mutations in p53, a protein often described as the "guardian of the genome." In healthy cells, p53 helps prevent damaged cells from continuing to grow. In many cancers, including aggressive breast cancers, p53 becomes mutated and loses this protective function. These mutant forms of p53 can adopt abnormal conformations that allow cancer cells to survive, divide, and resist treatment. Sethera will use its polymacrocyclic peptide platform to discover constrained peptide molecules that bind mutant p53 and stabilize conformations associated with restored tumor-suppressive activity. Rather than simply blocking a cancer target, the goal is to identify molecules capable of modulating mutant p53 structure and function in ways that are difficult to achieve with conventional modalities. This approach could support a new therapeutic strategy for breast cancers driven by p53 mutations, including forms of the disease that currently have limited targeted treatment options. "This program represents an important external validation of both our platform and our strategy of applying architecture-diverse peptides to targets that have remained beyond the practical reach of many established drug classes," said Karsten Eastman, PhD, CEO of Sethera Therapeutics. BUFFALO, NY - Hyundai Hope On Wheels(R)(HHOW), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supported by Hyundai Motor America and its U.S. dealers, awarded a $100,000 Hyundai Impact Award Grant to Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center to continue its long-standing commitment to advancing pediatric cancer. The Hyundai Impact Award was presented to David Byrwa, MD, at Roswell Park on Thursday to support research into CAR T-cell therapy for children with relapsed or treatment-resistant acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Dr. Brywa works in the Department of Pediatric Oncology at Roswell Park. 14-year-old Kienen Duggan, a pediatric patient at Roswell Park, shared her cancer story. Kienen was diagnosed with AML last August. She underwent chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant - with her sister being the donor. "Through it all, I knew I could rely on my doctors here at Roswell Park. One of them was Dr. Dave [Brywa]. He has been there since the beginning," said Kienen. "I always had faith and trust in my doctors at Roswell Park. For every up and down, my doctors were always there rooting for me and cheering me on every step of the way." Keinen has been declared cancer free and rang the Victory Bell at Roswell Park on April 24. This grant through Hyundai Hope on Wheels supports the development of a promising new CAR T-cell therapy for children with limited treatment options. "Our goal is to bring promising discoveries from the laboratory to the children who need them most. This grant allows us to take an important step toward evaluating a new CAR T-cell therapy that has the potential to improve outcomes for pediatric AML patients," said Dr. Byrwa. WAM 17 Jul 2026, 13:57 GMT+ NEW YORK, 17th July, 2026 (WAM) - Burjeel Medical City (BMC) has entered into a clinical and academic collaboration with New York-based Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Centre, a US National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centre, to establish a specialised thoracic surgery programme in the UAE. The agreement, which was signed in New York, combines Roswell Park's clinical protocols, multidisciplinary expertise, and academic capabilities with BMC's advanced infrastructure, oncology services, and network. BMC will establish a dedicated thoracic surgery service for cancers affecting the lungs, esophagus, mediastinum, and chest wall. The programme will offer robot-assisted, video-assisted thoracoscopic (VATS), and conventional open procedures based on clinical needs. The programme will be integrated into the multidisciplinary care pathway of Burjeel Cancer Institute (BCI), bringing together thoracic surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pulmonology, pathology, and radiology. Patients will receive coordinated care from diagnosis through surgery, recovery, and follow-up. Thoracic tumour board meetings will allow BMC physicians to review complex cases with Roswell Park specialists. The collaboration will also provide access to Roswell Park faculty for selected reviews and second opinions. Clinical pathways will align with international standards, including National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines. BioSapien partners with Roswell Park and BA Sciences for MediChip cancer treatment trials

BioSapien, a biotech company developing a localised cancer drug delivery platform, has partnered with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and BA Sciences for manufacturing ahead of Phase I clinical trials in the UAE. The company has completed its first clinical batch of MediChip, a 3D-printed, slow-release drug delivery platform, at Roswell Park's cleanroom facility in Buffalo, New York. BioSapien is the first external company to lease cleanroom space from the cancer centre, which has also supported its US Investigational New Drug submission. BA Sciences has validated all GMP analytics required for the clinical product and is conducting stability studies. MediChip attaches to tissue to deliver drugs directly to tumour sites, reducing systemic side effects. Initial trials will focus on colorectal cancer patients.
