Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or a related field is required.
  • Strong fundamentals in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, especially compressible flow, are required.
  • Experience with the design, analysis, and performance-map modeling of centrifugal compressors in high-speed turbomachinery is required.
  • Ability to write one-dimensional mean-line performance models in modern programming languages and integrate third-party APIs and libraries is required.
  • Proficiency with computational fluid dynamics tools, preferably ANSYS CFX, and computer-aided design, preferably NX, is required.
  • At least 3 years of experience in turbomachinery aerodynamic design is required.
Responsibilities
  • Design and optimize compressor impellers, diffusers, and related flow paths to meet performance and operating-range targets.
  • Perform steady- and unsteady-flow computational fluid dynamics simulations.
  • Develop and maintain one-dimensional mean-line performance models.
  • Automate performance-evaluation and design-optimization workflows.
  • Support testing to validate aerodynamic and mechanical performance.
  • Correlate experimental results with analytical predictions to continuously improve design tools and modeling processes for accuracy and efficiency.
  • Work closely with the mechanical design team to ensure the structural integrity and manufacturability of impellers and associated components.
  • Work in a collaborative environment to maintain a stable codebase using Git workflows.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with multi-stage compressor systems and system-level simulation and integration.
  • Ability to own mechanical analysis and optimization of aerodynamic components.
  • A strong analytical and problem-solving approach based on first principles and physics.
  • Ability to interpret complex flow fields and system-level interactions.
  • Familiarity with designing compression or expansion systems using supercritical or transcritical carbon dioxide as the working fluid.
  • A master's or Ph.D. degree is preferred.

Manufacturo partners with Karman Industries to scale production of 10MW thermal systems for AI data centres

Manufacturo, a manufacturing software platform, has partnered with Los Angeles-based Karman Industries to support production of high-efficiency thermal systems. The collaboration establishes a data-driven production environment for build execution, traceability and scaling from early runs to volume manufacturing. Karman recently launched its Heat Processing Unit, a modular 10MW thermal platform designed for AI data centres that consolidates thermal infrastructure into high-density modules. The company plans broader applications across energy-intensive sectors including industrial, geothermal and nuclear power. Manufacturo will provide digital work instructions, device history records and change governance across critical assemblies. Karman expects initial customer deliveries in Q3 2026 from its Los Angeles GigaWerx facility, designed for 1GW annual production with plans to reach 4GW capacity.

L.A. startup uses SpaceX rocket tech to slash data centre cooling power and eliminate water use

Karman Industries, a Signal Hill startup, has raised $20 million to develop a cooling system for data centres using SpaceX rocket engine technology. The company claims its system requires less space, less power and no water compared to traditional methods. The technology uses liquid carbon dioxide as refrigerant, circulated through pumps based on rocket engine design rather than fans. Karman says the system can reduce cooling equipment space requirements by 80%. Traditional data centre cooling can consume as much water as a city of 50,000 people and accounts for up to 40% of power consumption. With nearly 100 gigawatts of new data centre capacity expected by 2030, energy constraints have become a major expansion barrier. Karman expects to begin building its first compressors in Long Beach later this year.
