What believers are saying

  • Q2 2026 revenue hit $11.5 billion, while data center revenue reached $6.7 billion.
  • AMD guided Q3 2026 revenue to about $13 billion, signaling continued acceleration.
  • July 2026 OpenAI and Anthropic deals anchor multi-gigawatt demand for MI450 systems.

What critics are saying

  • MI450 shipments start in 2027; any ramp slip leaves AMD chasing Nvidia again.
  • OpenAI warrants and milestone pricing create circular-demand risk if AMD stock stalls below targets.
  • China export controls and Nvidia's entrenched software stack threaten AMD's AI share through 2027.

What makes AMD unique

  • AMD sells CPUs, GPUs, and rack-scale systems across servers, PCs, and AI clusters.
  • Helios plus Instinct MI450 ties AMD chips, networking, and software into one platform.
  • OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft validate AMD as a second-source AI infrastructure vendor.

AMD overtakes Intel with $1T valuation, acquires AI firm World Labs for $8.2B

AMD's market capitalisation now stands at around $1 trillion, approximately 60% higher than Intel's $622 billion, reversing a dramatic shift from 2016 when Intel was worth 28 times more than AMD. AMD recently announced an $8.2 billion acquisition of AI firm World Labs, exceeding AMD's entire market value from a decade ago. The company's data centre segment revenue reached $6.7 billion in Q2 2026, surpassing Intel's $6.3 billion in the same category. AMD's server processor market share has grown from 3.2% in late 2018 to 34.5% by Q2 2026. The company's success partly stems from using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing's advanced processes whilst Intel struggled with its own manufacturing capabilities. Intel's foundry division remains central to its turnaround strategy, though outside customers currently represent only 5% of foundry revenue.

AMD secures OpenAI deal as revenue hits $34.6B, but Arm's licensing model powers 99% of smartphones

Advanced Micro Devices and Arm are both semiconductor companies positioned in artificial intelligence hardware, but they operate differently. AMD designs high-performance processors and graphics cards for data centres, gaming, and PCs. Arm licenses energy-efficient chip architecture that powers virtually all smartphones globally. AMD's fiscal year ended December 2025 delivered revenue of nearly $34.6 billion, up 34.3% year-on-year. Net income reached approximately $4.3 billion, compared to $1.6 billion the previous year. The company recently secured a multiyear agreement with OpenAI for its MI450 series GPUs. AMD maintains a current ratio of roughly 2.9x and a debt-to-equity ratio of approximately 0.1x. Stock-based compensation represented about 21.2% of operating cash flow. Arm earns revenue through licensing fees and royalties rather than manufacturing chips. Its technology appears in over 350 billion chips and dominates the smartphone market.

AMD's data center revenue doubles to $6.7B as analyst dollar-cost averages despite 230x P/E ratio

Advanced Micro Devices' Data Centre revenue doubled to $6.7 billion in Q2 FY2026, now representing 58% of total sales. Management projects Data Centre revenue will more than double again in 2027. The chipmaker secured major commitments from OpenAI, Meta Platforms, and Anthropic, with deployments ranging from 2 to 6 gigawatts of GPU capacity. AMD's non-GAAP operating margin expanded to 27% from 12% year-over-year, whilst fiscal 2025 free cash flow more than doubled to $5.5 billion. AMD trades at 230 times trailing earnings with a 2.48 beta, though forward estimates show a lower 49 times earnings multiple. The company maintains a 0.071 debt-to-equity ratio and holds net cash. Export controls cost AMD approximately $440 million in fiscal 2025.

AMD shares surge 25% after forecasting Q3 revenue to rise 16% to $13B, driven by data center growth

AMD's third-quarter revenue guidance of approximately $13 billion exceeded its second-quarter guidance of $11.2 billion, representing a 16.1% increase. Since the 4 August guidance announcement, AMD stock has gained 25.4% compared to 0.9% for the S&P 500. Management attributed the higher guidance to strong double-digit growth expected in data centre and embedded segments, offsetting modest declines anticipated in client and gaming divisions. The company maintained its adjusted gross margin guidance at approximately 56%. AMD's chart shows an intact uptrend, with the stock trading 19.4% above its 50-day average at the 29 September close. The company's second-quarter revenue of $11.5 billion exceeded guidance, setting a record.

Cathie Wood dumps $110M of AMD, buys Nvidia and Broadcom

Cathie Wood's ARK Invest sold $110 million worth of Advanced Micro Devices shares whilst purchasing $81.04 million of Nvidia and $25.56 million of Broadcom. This follows a similar transaction on 28 August, when ARK sold $74.5 million of AMD and bought $55.6 million of Nvidia and $20.5 million of Broadcom. The moves come as AMD recently acquired Fei-Fei Li's AI business World Labs for $8.2 billion in shares. Meanwhile, Nvidia reported fiscal second-quarter sales rising 106% to $96.22 billion and added $150 billion to its share-repurchase authorisation. Broadcom's fiscal third-quarter AI revenue rose 221% to $16.7 billion, with the company forecasting fiscal 2027 AI sales to exceed $115 billion. ARK has not explained the AMD sales.
