- New York State Certification in Special Education is required.
- School Based Leader Certification is required; candidates who are in the process of obtaining it will be considered.
- A minimum of five years of experience as a teacher of students with disabilities is required.
- Provide certified coverage as needed for vacancies, medical leave, education and other leaves, absences, and break coverage.
- Elicit referrals for students in need of placement through outreach to the Central Based Support Team.
- Act as liaison with Committee on Special Education teams for students in need of special education programs and attend meetings as needed.
- Participate as a member of the school-based team during screenings of incoming students for placement and planning.
- Access outside evaluation materials and review assessments for completeness, accuracy, and consistency.
- Review students’ current developmental profiles to ensure appropriate placement recommendations and ensure that goals are appropriate and current.
- Conduct observations to assess students’ ability to interact and perform and identify individual student needs for participation in the least restrictive environment.
- Monitor educational programming, ensure staff understand responsibilities related to IEP implementation, ensure pre- and post-assessment of student development, and collect and review progress reports for IEP updates and annual reviews according to mandated timelines and specifications.
- Participate in the development of IEPs to ensure completeness and appropriateness.
- Meet regularly with the School Principal and classroom staff to assess, develop, adapt, and implement a New York State Prekindergarten Foundation for the Common Core or New York State Common Core Standards-based curriculum informed by authentic assessment data.
- Conduct research and make recommendations on curriculum projects and materials that directly affect students’ learning needs.
- Provide teaching staff with support in developing lessons, planning instruction, and classroom management.
- Provide direct classroom support in implementing methodologies and approaches.
- Work individually and collectively with teaching staff to ensure they are properly trained.
- Support staff professional development by presenting workshops on effective content-area instructional practices.

For five years, AHRC New York City has partnered with NYC Health + Hospitals, and now New York State Office of Mental Health and NYS Office for People With Developmental Disabilities to enable people with developmental disabilities, autism and suspected IDD and autism, who have co-occurring mental health diagnoses, to exit unnecessary hospital stays and move into a community transition program, one with intensive clinical and case management supports.
