Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of full-time, paid experience learning the machinist trade as an apprentice.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures governing the machinist trade.
  • Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the machinist trade.
  • Knowledge of the principles of machinery as they apply to the trade.
  • Knowledge of blueprint reading.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the machinist trade.
  • Ability to care for and use machinist tools.
  • Ability to accurately follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to prepare records and reports of work performed.
  • A valid proper-class motor-vehicle license in Pennsylvania before appointment and throughout employment.
Responsibilities
  • Test new equipment for performance and recommend corrective methods for malfunctions.
  • Check equipment and modifications for safety compliance.
  • Operate machine-shop equipment, including lathes, milling machines, shapers, planers, radial drill presses, surface grinders, and band saws.
  • Work with reciprocating and centrifugal pumps and compressors used for air, vacuum, water, and steam.
  • Repair electrical motors, valves, automatic lubricators, automatic draft fans and blowers, pump shafts, bearings, and seals.
  • Repair or install equipment in schools and departments throughout the School District.
  • Supervise and instruct subordinates in the operation of machine-shop equipment when assigned.
  • Oversee the work of trainees when assigned.
