Mexican jalapenos tied to Salmonella outbreak in 27 US states. By Abu Sultan and Mrinmay Dey Reuters Updated August 5, 2026 7:57 PM Gift Article Aug 5 (Reuters) - U.S. health officials are investigating a Salmonella outbreak linked to Mexican jalapeno peppers that has sickened 345 people in 27 states, prompting supplier Coast Citrus Distributors to recall peppers sent to restaurants including Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA. Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said 36 hospitalizations and no deaths have been reported, while the investigation remains ongoing. FDA said illnesses began between June 19 and July 20. Salmonella infections can cause diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps and can be particularly severe in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. The outbreak comes amid heightened scrutiny of food safety in the restaurant industry following a recent U.S. cyclosporiasis outbreak that prompted investigations by health authorities and renewed concerns about produce supply chains. The FDA and the CDC linked that outbreak to lettuce served at Yum Brands' Taco Bell restaurants and later identified Taylor Farms' operations in central Mexico as the source of the lettuce. On Wednesday, the agencies expanded the cyclosporiasis probe to 15 U.S. states. Chipotle previously faced a series of foodborne illness outbreaks that hurt sales and led the burrito chain to adopt stricter food safety procedures. OUTBREAK LINKED TO JALAPENOS FROM SINALOA Health agencies linked the outbreak to jalapeno peppers supplied by a common grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed in the U.S. by Coast Citrus Distributors. The company has agreed to recall the remaining product and is notifying affected customers, the FDA said. The U.S. investigation identified restaurants including Chipotle and QDOBA, a Mexican-style restaurant chain, that had received jalapenos imported by Coast Citrus Distributors. Chipotle has since switched jalapeno suppliers for its restaurants beginning July 20, while QDOBA stopped using jalapenos on July 28 and is no longer serving them, the FDA said. Coast Citrus, when contacted by Reuters, said it did not have an immediate comment. Chipotle shares fell more than 8% on Tuesday after the company said it had removed jalapenos from restaurants in Minnesota and other locations that received the product. "FDA does not consider there to be a current ongoing risk from these establishments to consumers in this outbreak," the FDA said in a statement. The FDA said Coast Citrus does not appear to have supplied jalapenos directly to grocery stores and advised consumers and businesses not to eat, sell, or serve recalled peppers from Sinaloa. First lawsuit filed against Chipotle in Salmonella Outbreak linked to tainted jalapeños; sixteen-year-old diagnosed with ulcerative colitis after eating at a local Chipotle restaurant. Aug 05, 2026, 17:38 ET Suit alleges contaminated food served at Chipotle left a healthy, active teenager with a chronic, life-long inflammatory bowel condition. BOZEMAN, Mont., Aug. 5, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - National food safety and Salmonella law firm Ron Simon & Associates, together with Bozeman-based Edwards Law Firm, has filed the first lawsuit against Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. arising from the multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to tainted jalapeños. The suit was filed in the Montana Eighteenth Judicial District Court, Gallatin County, on behalf of a sixteen-year-old boy who developed a serious Salmonella infection - and was subsequently diagnosed with ulcerative colitis - after eating food from the Chipotle restaurant located at 1919 W. Main Street in Bozeman, Montana. The action was brought on behalf of H.S., a minor, by and through his mother and natural guardian, A. Smith. A visit to Chipotle - and a life-long chronic diagnosis According to the complaint, H.S. - a healthy, active sixteen-year-old - consumed food purchased from the Bozeman Chipotle on or about July 9, 2026. Five days later, he became ill with hallmark symptoms of Salmonella infection, including nausea, watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, fever, dehydration, malaise, and loss of appetite. As his condition worsened, H.S. presented to the Emergency Room at Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Medical Center on July 16, 2026, where a CT scan revealed inflammation of his intestines. Stool testing subsequently returned positive for Salmonella, and he followed up with his providers at Bozeman Health Pediatrics for continued treatment. The complaint alleges that as a result of his Salmonella infection and the resulting damage to his gastrointestinal tract, H.S. was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis - a chronic inflammatory bowel condition with life-long consequences. He was ill for more than eight days and continues to experience ongoing symptoms, including abdominal cramps and nausea. The growing multistate outbreak traced to jalapeños The lawsuit comes amid an expanding Salmonella outbreak that health officials have tied to jalapeños served at Chipotle. According to the complaint, it began with the Minnesota Department of Health identifying 110 cases in that state alone, and among the 84 sickened individuals interviewed so far, 75 reporting having eaten at Chipotle between June 14 and July 14, 2026. Patient interviews and genomic testing helped investigators pinpoint jalapeños as the likely culprit. Chipotle has since removed jalapeños from its other restaurants in other states after determining the peppers were linked to the outbreak, stating that it acted out of an abundance of caution, and replacing them with peppers from different growers. The complaint alleges that Chipotle restaurants, including those in Bozeman, are among the retail establishments that have already replaced the potentially contaminated jalapeños. Federal authorities are now involved alongside state investigators: the FDA confirmed that on July 22nd that it had initiated a traceback investigation of multiple ingredients in response to the cluster of Salmonella illnesses identified by state officials and the CDC. The investigation into the origin and nature of the contamination remains ongoing. The allegations against Chipotle The suit asserts claims for strict product liability, negligence (including negligence per se), and breach of implied warranties. Among the specific allegations, the complaint contends that Chipotle: * Manufactured, prepared, and sold food that was defective and unreasonably dangerous because it contained Salmonella, a dangerous pathogen; * Failed to properly test the food before placing it into the stream of commerce, and failed to prevent contamination from reaching consumers; * Failed to follow FDA-recommended good manufacturing practices and to adequately monitor the safety and sanitary conditions of its premises; and * Failed to warn the general public that its food was contaminated with Salmonella, despite knowing or having reason to know of the danger. The complaint further alleges that the contaminated food was "adulterated" under both Montana law and the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Plaintiff seeks past and future economic and non-economic damages and has demanded a jury trial. Quote from National Food Safety Lawyer Ron Simon Ron Simon, attorney for H.S. and many other victims in the outbreak, issued the following statement "Chipotle sells itself on fresh ingredients, but fresh means nothing if the supply chain isn't safe. A healthy sixteen-year-old ate a meal and came away with a chronic bowel disease he will manage for the rest of his life. This is the first lawsuit in this outbreak, but with well over a hundred confirmed cases and counting, it will not be the last." Chipotle announces the recall of its famous jalapeños after a salmonella outbreak. According to the Minnesota Department of Health, 75 cases of contamination have been reported to date, all of whom said they ate at Chipotle. Aug 05, 2026, 12:30 PM EDT This Tuesday, the fast-food restaurant chain specializing in Tex-Mex cuisine, Chipotle Mexican Grill, announced the recall of its famous jalapeños in several of its restaurants due to a possible salmonella outbreak at one of its locations in Minnesota. Through a statement, the restaurant chain indicated that, "out of caution, we are removing the jalapeños from our restaurants and replacing them with products from other producers. The Minnesota Department of Health has confirmed that it has no concerns regarding Chipotle. We are cooperating with public health authorities in their efforts," it assured. According to the report from the health agency in Minnesota, 110 cases related to this outbreak have been identified so far, of which 75 said they had eaten at Chipotle between June 14 and July 14. For its part, the restaurant said it had replaced the peppers and thoroughly reviewed its supply chain, after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported on July 22 about a trace of "multiple ingredients" that tested positive for salmonella contamination. In that regard, Carlota Medus, senior epidemiologist supervisor at the Minnesota Department of Health, highlighted that, "given the measures Chipotle implemented, we are not concerned. However, it is possible that the outbreak will continue if the contaminated food is served elsewhere," she said. The epidemiologist supervisor also noted that the health agency expects the number of cases to increase even if the illnesses occurred a couple of weeks ago, as it will take time to detect cases through epidemiological surveillance. Although Chipotle has taken the necessary measures, by the close of this Tuesday its shares fell 8.8% to $34.18, as did other restaurants, which have been affected after the cyclosporiasis outbreak, where their sales have fallen up to 30%. The international chain has 4,000 locations as of December 2025. Deriving its name from "chipotle," the Nahuatl name (from "chilpoctli") for a smoked and dried jalapeño chilli pepper, Chipotle Mexican Grill was founded in 1993 after founder Steve Ells was inspired to open the restaurant after visiting taquerias and burrito shops in San Francisco's Mission District while working as a chef.
