Requirements
  • Two (2) years of experience in court reporting
  • Certification as a National Court Reporters Association Registered Professional Reporter (NCRA RPR) or equivalent (e.g., state certification, other licensure, or education proof)
  • Ability to accurately report at speeds of 225 words per minute and translate takedown from steno to English
  • Working knowledge of legal and medical terminology, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and basic mathematics; knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations governing court reporting and transcription activities; ability to use court reporting and transcription equipment
  • Compliance with National Court Reporters Association standards; ability to maintain exhibits and documentary evidence; effective communication with counsel, coworkers, supervisors, and public
  • Consecutive employment in a position with comparable responsibilities within the past five (5) years
  • Computer proficiency to communicate via email and use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and related tools
  • Fluent in spoken, read, and written English; ability to read portions of transcripts during proceedings and clarify inaudible statements
  • High school diploma or GED; completion of apprentice and internship training in court reporting; sufficient coursework to obtain professional court reporter certification from a recognized agency or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Licensing/certification options include Professional certification as an NCRA RPR or NVRA Certified Verbatim Reporter (CVR); Board certification from Virginia Judicial Council; NCRA RPR if state lacks license; Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) where applicable; real-time certification; notary license; valid driver's license; U.S. citizenship; eligibility for security/Background checks and potential top secret clearance
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) and Adobe; ability to obtain facility access authorization; willingness to undergo background investigations and potentially financial disclosure; ability to work flexible hours and travel up to 50 miles from Norfolk, Virginia
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ethical conduct; ability to submit to security clearances as required
  • Experience with the Administrative Investigation Board (AIB) process, Equal Opportunity Hearing, MSPB, or arbitration hearings is preferred
  • Notary public or ability to administer oaths; capable of stenographic recording and producing accurate verbatim records
  • Commitment to deliver thorough, accurate, and well-documented work meeting established criteria
  • Technical proficiency to provide real-time transcription and support remote platforms (Microsoft Teams, Zoom for Government) and to test and provide feedback on virtual litigation platform
  • Must be able to operate within 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST with flexibility for outside-hours testimony and travel
