About the Job

Requirements

  • A master's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent is required; a Ph.D. is preferred.
  • Relevant industry experience working on structural mechanics problems for electronics assemblies: 3–5 years for Ph.D. holders or 5–7 years for M.S. holders.
  • Solid understanding of theoretical and experimental structural mechanics, with domain knowledge in non-linear analysis, explicit analysis, linear dynamics and vibrations, and coupled thermal-structural analysis.
  • Understanding of ISO 17650, AEC-Q standards, or other automotive/OEM standards.
  • Expertise in integrated circuit package design and materials, and common chip-package interaction failure modes across applications, including high-power semiconductors and high-performance compute chips such as AI and ADAS chips.
  • Expertise in material testing, tensile testing, designing customized test fixtures, and calibrating finite element analysis models for materials including adhesives, foams, elastomers, plastics, metals, and brittle materials.
  • Broad understanding of the structural composition and manufacturing of package types including ball grid arrays, system-on-chip, and system-in-package.
  • Strong foundation in finite element analysis solvers, particularly Ansys, Abaqus, OptiStruct, and SimLab/SimSolid, with the ability to independently set up, execute, and troubleshoot analysis convergence issues.
  • Proficiency with pre- and post-processing tools such as HyperMesh, ANSA/Meta, and SimLab.
  • Understanding of constitutive models and failure modes in metals, plastics, and elastomers.
  • Proficiency using Python or MATLAB for analysis and post-analysis data processing.
  • Experience developing and leading other multidisciplinary engineers.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • Excellent documentation practices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead structural and thermo-mechanical design risk management for low-voltage electronics assemblies within vehicle electrical hardware.
  • Execute multi-scale numerical simulations, including random vibration, shock, and thermal cycling, for electronics assemblies to establish and meet functional performance and reliability targets.
  • Conduct structural stiffness assessments and actuation mechanics simulations for haptic switches and touch surfaces to define tactile feel, deformation limits, and long-term switch response.
  • Perform non-linear structural evaluations under human-comfort loading and abuse scenarios, including localized over-actuation, high-impact press forces, and mishandling, to prevent plastic deformation or fatigue failure.
  • Direct multi-physics simulations for low-voltage electronic modules and sensing hardware, including radar, ultrasonic, optical, and positional sensors, to minimize thermal/mechanical distortion and structural deflection under operational and environmental stress.
  • Define structural risk margins, dictate component selection, and optimize component layouts on heterogeneously integrated printed circuit boards.
  • Provide design guidance by setting enclosure stiffness requirements, defining thermal stack-up, optimizing cooling architecture, and specifying material systems to electronics assembly design teams.
  • Establish material characterization protocols and manage the centralized simulation material database for critical electronics components, polymers, and elastomers.
  • Direct, manage, and validate structural benchmarking, including model correlation through sine-sweep testing and high-fidelity strain-gauge measurements.
  • Provide simulation expertise and strategic support to reliability engineering teams for root-cause analysis during testing and validation.
  • Drive cross-functional program decisions and consensus across multidisciplinary engineering teams as a technical authority.

About the Company

Rivian

Makes electric pickups, SUVs and delivery vans

Rivian designs and builds electric pickup trucks, SUVs, and delivery vans, pairing off-road ability with electronics and software it develops itself. In 2021, its R1T became the first fully electric pickup truck on the US consumer market, ahead of larger rivals such as Ford and Tesla. It makes the R1T pickup, the R1S and R2 SUVs, and commercial vans in Normal, Illinois, and sells them directly online and in its own stores rather than through dealers. Its vehicles run on Rivian's own software, which gains features through updates sent over the internet, and most revenue comes from vehicle sales, with service and optional software adding more. Rivian was founded in 2009 and is based in Irvine, California.
