Business Insider names Christian Baesler permanent CEO to reinvent outlet for post-social media era

Axel Springer has appointed Christian Baesler as permanent CEO of Business Insider, the outlet confirmed. Baesler, who joined as interim chief in June, plans to reinvent the nearly 20-year-old publication for a post-search and social media era. The company is expanding beyond web traffic, with audiences across newsletters, events, YouTube (over 10 million subscribers), and recently launched streaming platforms. Business Insider will focus on direct sales and subscriptions through four verticals: Markets Insider, AI Insider, Small Business Insider, and CMO Insider. Axel Springer acquired Business Insider in 2015 for $442 million. The German media giant, which also owns Politico and Morning Brew in the US, says it remains committed to the publication's long-term success despite recent struggles.

Business Insider CEO Barbara Peng to leave end of June amid AI disruption and newsroom cuts

Business Insider CEO Barbara Peng will depart by the end of June to pursue opportunities in technology. Christian Baesler will serve as interim lead. Peng, who held the role for over two years, cited massive technological change as driving her decision. Her departure follows last week's announcement of newsroom cuts affecting under 5% of its approximately 250-person editorial staff. Business Insider has reduced its workforce by 21% in 2025 and 8% in 2024. The company faces declining search traffic as AI-powered search engines summarise content, threatening traditional publishing business models. German publisher Axel Springer, which acquired a majority stake in 2015, praised Peng's leadership during the company's transformation. Peng said Business Insider is now "positioned for the future of business journalism".
