Requirements
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Successfully complete the Minnesota Department of Human Services Background Study.
  • Be enrolled in an alcohol and drug counselor education program at an accredited school or educational program and earn a minimum of 9 semester credits per calendar year toward an associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degree.
  • Complete degree requirements that include an additional 18 semester credits or 270 hours of alcohol and drug counseling-related coursework and 440 hours of practicum.
  • Maintain professional standards of conduct and appearance with co-workers and the public.
  • Maintain client confidentiality and ethical boundaries, including adherence to HIPAA and agency policies.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of substance use disorder and mental health treatment principles.
  • Use documentation practices and electronic health record systems; training is provided.
  • Manage multiple tasks and time effectively and handle stressful situations.
  • Apply critical thinking, problem-solving, and a solution-focused approach.
  • Interact respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Responsibilities
  • Work in the outpatient substance use disorder program alongside a Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor to provide addiction treatment services.
  • Assist the Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor in providing daily care for clients.
  • Coordinate and deliver clinical services within a therapeutic community under supervision.
  • Apply theoretical and ethical principles of addiction counseling in practice settings.
  • Complete orientation covering job functions, policies and procedures, client confidentiality, ethical boundaries, HIV minimum standards, client needs, and emergency procedures.
  • Complete training on mandatory reporting under Minnesota statutes and procedures for obtaining client releases of information.
  • Observe comprehensive assessments and learn documentation procedures.
  • Close out charts and ensure documentation is accurate and complete.
  • Observe and/or co-facilitate classes based on curriculum knowledge.
  • Review treatment plans with clients and document them in charts under supervision.
  • Learn the duties and responsibilities of a Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor.
  • Become familiar with referral sources in clients’ local communities and assist with providing contact information or making referrals as needed.
  • Meet weekly with the Program Manager or Treatment Director for clinical reviews.
  • Gain experience in screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, referrals, reports and record keeping, and consultation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
