Marvel Fusion develops laser-driven fusion energy using non-thermal direct-drive inertial confinement with nanostructured fuel targets. It aims to trigger fusion reactions with low-neutronic fuels like hydrogen-boron, reducing long-lived radioactive waste. The company builds a new high-powered laser facility in collaboration with Colorado State University, housing multiple multi-petawatt lasers to conduct experiments and advance fusion research. Its approach differs from many competitors by applying direct-drive laser for fusion with nanostructured fuels and a focus on hydrogen-boron to minimize waste, supported by a strong academic and private funding network. The goal is to enable a safe, clean, and reliable fusion power plant that helps the world move toward sustainable energy.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Marvel Fusion closed €113 million in March 2025, lifting total funding to €385 million.
  • CSU expects ATLAS completion in 2026, and Marvel Fusion posted construction progress in October 2025.
  • LMU inaugurated LION 2 in July 2025, expanding Marvel Fusion's Munich experiment capacity.

What critics are saying

  • Marvel Fusion still sells a 2032 prototype, leaving eight years before revenue-scale validation.
  • ATLAS completion slipped to 2026, and any CSU delay pushes the first U.S. milestone.
  • If target fabrication costs and laser uptime miss plan, the hydrogen-boron thesis dies.

What makes Marvel Fusion unique

  • Marvel Fusion pairs laser-driven fusion with nanostructured targets, unlike tokamak competitors.
  • Siemens Energy joined in March 2025, giving industrial grid and plant-design credibility.
  • Its CSU ATLAS facility targets three multi-petawatt lasers, a rare U.S. asset for 2026.
