U.S. News & World Report names VCU Medical Center No. 1 hospital in Virginia. The report also recognized the hospital as the best in the metro Richmond area for the 16th consecutive year. Additionally, cardiology and orthopaedics are ranked among the nation's best. Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center has been named a 2026-2027 Best Hospital by the U.S. News & World Report, ranking No. 1 in Virginia. "VCU Health is where world-class discovery meets life-saving care. As a teaching and research-based health system, our mission is to combine innovation, impactful discovery, and solutions that save and transform human lives," said Michael Rao, Ph.D., president of Virginia Commonwealth University. "This ranking reflects our ability to deliver the highest levels of tertiary and quaternary care to the commonwealth, driven by dedicated teams who turn emerging and timely research into healing every day. We remain committed to ensuring that every Virginian has access to the very best healthcare in the world." The publication also ranked VCU Medical Center No. 1 in the Richmond metro area for the 16th consecutive year, underscoring the consistency, dedication and unwavering compassion demonstrated each day by VCU Health team members. "These outstanding rankings for VCU Medical Center reflect what we've always known to be true across the health system: our dedicated and experienced team members put patients first," said Marlon Levy, M.D., CEO of VCU Health. "From routine to complex care, patients can trust VCU Health, and we take immense pride in seeing that reflected in our recent rankings."Of the nearly 4,500 hospitals evaluated as part of the annual list, only 16% of hospitals earned a Best Hospitals designation. "It is an honor for VCU Medical Center to be recognized as number one in Virginia and, for 16 years running, in Richmond as well," said Jim Willis, president of VCU Medical Center. "Driven by a purposeful mission, our team members work tirelessly toward excellent patient care, outcomes, safety and experience. These rankings reaffirm our efforts and our dedication to being the best we can be for the communities we serve." It is the result of exceptional team members, an unwavering commitment to clinical excellence, groundbreaking research and the education of future healthcare leaders; all of which define the strengths of a premiere academic medical center. Patricia Sime, M.D., chair of Internal Medicine at VCU Health, is one of the many examples of the powerful synergy that defines an academic medical center. As both a researcher and practicing physician, Sime is reshaping the global approach to the treatment of pulmonary fibrosis through a seamless integration of research, patient care, and education. From groundbreaking discoveries in the laboratory to real-world clinical applications, Sime's work is giving hope to patients living with a disease that was once marked by limited treatment options. Sime's bench-to-bedside approach exemplifies how academic medicine drives innovation, improves outcomes and advances care for future generations. "It is such a privilege to share in our patients' journeys, to conduct the research that improves the treatments of tomorrow, and to train our highly motivated learners," Sime said. "It truly takes a team with the patient, and their family, right at the center, providing us all with the inspiration to do better every day." VCU Medical Center is 'High Performing' in several specialties, procedures and conditions. In addition to the top hospital accolade and national rankings for cardiology and orthopaedics, three adult specialties (cancer, gastroenterology and GI surgery, and neurology and neurosurgery) and 20 adult procedures and conditions were designated as 'High Performing' by U.S. News. Cancer care services, managed by VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, ranked No. 1 in the Richmond metro area. This is the first year that U.S. News has listed certain specialty rankings by region. 'High Performing' is the highest distinction a hospital can earn as part of the U.S. News' Best Hospitals procedures and conditions ratings. Fewer than half of the thousands of hospitals evaluated earned a 'High Performing' designation in the types of care evaluated by U.S. News.

What to know about upcoming changes to the MCV Campus.

What to know about upcoming changes to the MCV Campus. Ahead of construction of a new School of Dentistry building and a proposed inpatient tower, a number of important changes are on the horizon. (File image) As Virginia Commonwealth University and VCU Health prepare for two major construction projects - a new VCU School of Dentistry building and a proposed VCU Health inpatient tower - a number of important changes will soon get underway on the MCV Campus. "It is an incredibly exciting time for VCU with so many transformative new construction projects on the horizon," said Rich Sliwoski, associate vice president of Facilities Management. "We acknowledge that the logistics of construction - including temporary relocations and relocated services - present short-term hurdles, and we are profoundly grateful for our community's adaptability and partnership. Transformation like this takes a team effort, and together, we are building a legacy that will have a profound and positive impact for years to come." Hunton Student Center. The Hunton Student Center, 1110 E. Broad St., closed in May, and certain offices and resources relocated in mid-July to the VMI Building, 1000 E. Marshall St. Now in the VMI Building are the Division of Student Affairs' Graduate and Professional Student Initiatives and VCU Career Services' Suit Yourself Closet. Health Sciences Library. Moving into Hunton's current space during the upcoming academic year will be the Health Sciences Library. It is relocating from 509 N. 12th St. to accommodate a proposed new VCU Health inpatient tower that is critically needed to significantly increase VCU Health's capacity to serve patients and improve the care environment. Hunton's current space will be renovated to provide the temporarily relocated Health Sciences Library with student learning and collaboration spaces, as well as workspace for library staff. The first floor will feature study space and a makerspace, with additional study space on the second and third floors. Discussions about a permanent location for the Health Sciences Library are underway. In early 2027, most of the library's print materials will move to storage at the State Records Center, and there will be a period when they are unavailable while being processed into offsite storage. During this time, these low-use print materials may be requested through interlibrary loans. After processing is complete, items can be requested online and delivered to Cabell Library or the Health Sciences Library. Frequently used materials will remain onsite at Hunton. Throughout the moving process, all VCU Libraries' digital resources will be available around the clock for use in classrooms and clinical settings. Reference and research consultation and instruction will be offered throughout the transition. A firm timeline for the Health Sciences Library's renovation has not yet been set, though the current location on North 12th Street is expected to close in spring 2027 for four to six weeks to move materials, furnishings and staff to Hunton. The library is expected to be fully operational at Hunton by summer 2027. For more details on the Health Sciences Library move, visit here. Jonah L. Larrick Student Center. In December, the MCV Campus Recreation Center, an indoor recreation facility located in the Jonah L. Larrick Student Center, will temporarily close. Larrick is slated for demolition in spring 2027 because it will be the site of a five-story, 312,000-square-foot School of Dentistry building that will include classrooms, academic offices, cutting-edge academic laboratories, and clinics for predoctoral, dental hygiene and specialty dentistry programs, aligning with modern practices in dental education. Funding for the School of Dentistry building was included in the 2027-29 state budget approved in late June by the General Assembly and Gov. Abigail Spanberger. For more details on the new School of Dentistry building, visit here. The MCV Campus Recreation Center will move to 610 N. 10th St., the current site of the MCV Campus Bookstore. The recreation center is planned to reopen in summer 2027. During the spring semester while the new RecWell space is being renovated, no recreation services will be available on the MCV Campus. However, students will continue to have access to the Cary Street Gym on the Monroe Park Campus. The new MCV Campus fitness center will have approximately 3,000 square feet and will feature cardio and weight equipment, a functional fitness space and cabana-style restrooms and showers. Programmatically, RecWell will continue to offer its popular personal training and small group training at this location. RecWell will communicate directly with members to provide additional information about the closure, answer questions and address concerns about how it will impact individual members. A new bookstore location and timeline have yet to be determined. The Barnes and Noble @ VCU, located on the Monroe Park Campus at 1111 W. Broad St., will continue to be available to students on both campuses. VCU offers a point-to-point shuttle service, RamsXpress, that provides members of the VCU community with direct transportation between campuses, with stops at central locations. The shuttle runs Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and allows the VCU community to travel between campuses within 10 to 15 minutes. Its stops are not duplicative of current GRTC service locations. Also as a result of Larrick's planned demolition, Jonah's Express grab-and-go dining and Starbucks will close in spring 2027. VCU is currently exploring food options to continue serving MCV Campus students during the interim. For MCV Campus students who have questions about the upcoming changes, they are encouraged to reach out to the Division of Student Affairs. The Division of Student Affairs cares very much about students and their experience on the MCV Campus and is committed to helping support them during their time at VCU. Feel free to send any questions to Virginia Commonwealth University at [email protected]. VCU will continue to provide updates on these changes and projects as more information becomes available. VCU Health Board of Directors elects Cantor as chair, extends contract for CEO Levy.

VCU Health Board of Directors elects Cantor as chair, extends contract for CEO Levy. Additionally, board members Fotini "Fay" Manolios will serve as vice chair, Joel Nied will serve as secretary and Randolph Reynolds Jr. will serve as treasurer. (Joe Kuttenkuler, Enterprise Marketing and Communications) Diana Cantor, current acting chair of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System Authority Board of Directors, was elected to serve as chair of the board on Monday, July 13. Her term begins immediately and runs until June 30, 2028. This election is consistent with a new law updating the Board of Directors' structure and governance. Cantor is the first elected board chair in the authority's history; the previous law required former VCU president Eugene Trani and current President Michael Rao to serve as chair. "It's an honor to step into this role for the VCU Health Board of Directors," Cantor said. "VCU Health has extraordinary momentum and an essential mission: to improve and save lives while helping more Virginians access the care they need. I am inspired by the dedication of our entire team; their compassionate, patient-centered care is strengthened every day by VCU research and our shared commitment to serving the commonwealth." As chair, Cantor will lead the VCU Health System Authority board and focus on ensuring effective governance and supporting VCU Health's statutory purposes. She will work in close partnership with VCU Health's leadership team and fellow board members to advance the strategic objectives of the health system. "Ms. Cantor has been a trusted voice on our board, consistently bringing thoughtful perspectives and an unwavering commitment to our mission," said Marlon Levy, M.D., CEO of VCU Health. "As chair, she will provide invaluable leadership of the board as my leadership team and I continue to strengthen the VCU Health enterprise, supporting team members and delivering outstanding care to the patients and communities we serve." Cantor was first appointed to the Board of Directors in 2023 by former Virginia Gov. Glen Youngkin. She was reappointed to the board in 2026 by Don Scott, speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates Speaker. She is a member of the investment committee and the board of managers of Alternative Investment Management LLC and serves on several public and nonprofit boards across the country. Cantor served for more than a decade as the founding chief executive officer of the Virginia College Savings Plan, the state agency that administers Virginia's Section 529 college savings plans. In addition, she is a past chairman of the board and served for more than 10 years as a trustee of the Virginia Retirement System. Cantor is a certified public accountant and member of the state bar in Virginia, Florida and New York. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Florida's School of Accounting, a master's degree in business administration from the University of Miami and a law degree from New York University. "With Ms. Cantor's extensive experience on boards and her familiarity with Virginia and our health system following three years as a board member, she is an ideal chair," said Rao, who continues to serve on the board as VCU president. "For several years, I have advocated for a lay chair who is elected to lead the VCU Health board. I look forward to continuing to work with Diana in this role." Additionally, the following board members were elected as officers of the board and committee chairs: * Fotini "Fay" Manolios - board vice chair; chair of the Evaluation and Compensation Committee. * Joel Nied - board secretary; chair of the Governance Committee. * Randolph Reynolds Jr. - board treasurer; chair of the Finance Committee. * Hem Bhardwaj, M.D. - chair of the Quality, Safety, and Service Committee. * Mark Oley, Pharm.D. - chair of the Audit and Compliance Committee. "We look forward to working with Ms. Cantor and our committee chairs in these leadership roles," Levy said. "Every board member brings a great deal of experience, expertise and dedication to help us continue our mission critical work of preserving and restoring health for all people of Virginia and beyond." CEO contract extension. In June, the Board of Directors and VCU Board of Visitors extended Levy's contract for four years. Levy served as interim CEO starting in 2022 and was named to the position permanently in 2024. Under Levy's leadership and vision, VCU Health has expanded access to its unrivaled care, bringing world-class services closer to home for communities across Virginia. Milestone achievements, including the completion of the Children's Tower and current projects such as the Pauley Heart Center Pavilion and Chesterfield Pavilion, reflect his commitment to meeting the growing health care needs of the region. Levy's focus on quality, safety and operational excellence has also driven significant systemwide achievements. His leadership helped VCU Health earn its highest patient safety ratings to date in 2026 while strengthening the health system's financial foundation, as reflected in strong credit ratings from S&P Global Ratings and Moody's. "Dr. Levy leads with the heart of a physician and the steadiness of an experienced executive," Cantor said. "Under his leadership, VCU Health has strengthened its financial position, expanded access to care and built important momentum across our clinical, academic and research missions. The Board of Directors is grateful for his leadership, pleased to extend his contract and has confidence in the future."
