The Finance team helps Runpod scale with strong financial operations, reliable reporting, and the systems and controls needed to support a rapidly growing business. We work closely with leaders across the company to provide accurate financial information and build processes that can grow with Runpod.

We’re looking for a VP, Controller to lead Runpod’s accounting organization and build it for the company we’re becoming. Reporting to our CFO, you’ll own the integrity of our financial reporting, close, technical accounting, compliance, and controls, and you’ll set the strategy, team, and systems that let accounting scale ahead of the business.

This is a senior leadership role for someone who has built and led accounting functions at high-growth technology companies and still likes being close to the work. You’ll be a strategic partner to the CFO and the leadership team, represent accounting with our auditors, board, and investors, and make the calls on policy, structure, and tooling that will shape how Runpod operates for years to come.

You’ll turn Runpod’s accounting function into a scaled, audit-ready organization: a fast and accurate close, controls that hold up to outside scrutiny, technical accounting positions you can defend, and a team and systems ready for whatever comes next, from larger financings to public-company readiness.

Responsibilities

Lead Runpod’s accounting organization, setting its strategy, structure, and priorities as the company scales.
Build, hire, and develop a high-performing accounting team
Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close and deliver timely, accurate financial statements in accordance with US GAAP.
Serve as the company’s authority on revenue recognition and technical accounting, and set and maintain Runpod’s accounting policies.
Own the external audit relationship end to end and lead Runpod through increasingly rigorous audits.
Design and own an internal control environment built to the standard of a much larger company, with a clear path to SOX readiness.
Present financial results and key accounting matters to the CFO, executive team, board, and investors.
Partner with leaders across Finance, Legal, People, Revenue, and other teams on contracts, deal structures, equity, and decisions with accounting impact.
Set the roadmap for accounting systems and drive automation and AI across accounting workflows.
Oversee tax, compliance, and equity accounting, and manage the company’s outside accounting and tax advisors.
Lead the accounting work behind financings and other strategic transactions, including diligence and complex accounting events.

Requirements

8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 5+ years leading accounting teams.
CPA license.
Experience building and scaling an accounting function at a high-growth technology, SaaS, cloud infrastructure, or similarly fast-moving company.
Experience leading accounting through a major financing, a first Big 4 audit, or IPO readiness at a venture-backed company.
Deep expertise in US GAAP, technical accounting, and financial reporting.
A track record of designing and owning internal controls in a modern, integrated finance stack, including SOX or SOX-readiness work.
Experience leading external audits as the primary owner of the auditor relationship.
Comfort presenting to executives, boards, and investors, and turning complex accounting topics into clear decisions.
Strong judgment and a builder mindset: you set the direction and still go deep when the work calls for it.
A track record of using automation and AI to transform accounting workflows.
Successful completion of a background check.

"Being in a high-growth business where a lot of capital is flowing is extremely attractive," said Erickson, who previously served as CFO of the market research consumer insights platform Suzy. Runpod has grown substantially this year with annual recurring revenue jumping from $120 million in January to over $325 million today, the company stated in a press release. Likewise, the number of developers building on Runpod's platform has surged from 495,000 a year ago, to more than 1.2 million today. That includes large corporations such as Sony, Toyota, and Intel, the company stated. How we forecast, how we contract and commit capacity that we're buying across the board," said Erickson. "Those are all going to be very important elements as I think about the financial and operational strategy for the company." Runpod, with Erickson, will need to accomplish this in an environment where the supply of GPUs is constrained. AI companies are reportedly scrambling for GPU capacity while CFO Dive sister publication CIO Dive reported recently that tech giant Nvidia warned of supply bottlenecks extending into 2028. Erickson said he plans to make sure Runpod is "allocating resources in the correct way so that we can be able to supply those infrastructure needs to the demand that's coming." The company will also need to consider its strategy for going after that limited GPU supply and how to pay for it, he said. Returning to his roots. At Runpod, Erickson will apply his experience as senior finance manager at Amazon Web Services from 2011 to 2015, and finance director for Microsoft's Azure cloud business through 2017. At Amazon and Microsoft, Erickson worked in environments that grew rapidly, he said. Conducting due diligence and ensuring processes and tools are in place before making tough investment decisions were critical given the end-result could be costly, he said. "What's challenging in some of these businesses is usually the faster you grow, the more money you have to spend, and the more money that you're draining or burning," said Erickson. "How do you manage through a very high, fast growth environment, but also try to drive profitability through the operations?" Beyond the opportunity to help build a business in a "category-defining market," Erickson said Runpod has an excellent product market with about 1 million developers using its platform. That speaks to the value of what the company is offering, he said. Runpod's founders and management team also laid a strong foundation, Erickson added. When Erickson led financial planning at DigitalOcean from 2017 to 2023, the cloud computing and infrastructure-as-a-service company was similar to Runpod's current position, he said.
