About the company

Google runs the world's most used search engine and free services such as YouTube, Android, and Gmail, and it builds the Gemini AI models that work inside them. In 2017, its researchers invented the transformer, the neural network design behind ChatGPT and most other AI chatbots. People use these services without paying, and Google earns most of its money from ads placed beside search results and YouTube videos. Businesses rent computing power and Gemini models through Google Cloud, and Google also sells subscriptions and Pixel phones. Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google in 1998 as Stanford PhD students; it is based in Mountain View, California, United States, and is the main business of parent company Alphabet.

What believers are saying

  • Gemini caught on: its app's monthly users rose from 400 million in May 2025 to 1 billion by August 2026.
  • Cloud work is booked years ahead: Google Cloud had $514 billion of signed contracts still to deliver in June 2026.
  • Stock awards gained value: Alphabet shares rose 44% in the 12 months to October 2026, versus 2% for Microsoft.

What critics are saying

  • Cloud is still third: Google held 15% market share in the June 2026 quarter, behind Amazon's 28% and Microsoft's 20%.
  • AI spending outruns cash: Alphabet spent $44.9 billion on equipment in the June 2026 quarter, more than operations generated.
  • AI leadership is turning over: in August 2026, Demis Hassabis handed off running Google DeepMind, and veteran Jeff Dean left.

What makes Google unique

  • Consumer apps earn most profit: Google Services made $39.5 billion operating profit in the June 2026 quarter, 4.5 times Cloud.
  • Rivals rent its homemade AI chips: Claude maker Anthropic agreed in October 2025 to use up to 1 million TPUs.
  • Android dominates mobile browsing: it had 69% of global mobile web use in September 2026, versus 31% for iPhones.
