Requirements
  • At least 8 years of experience producing and editing graphics, including mapping and other types of visualization.
  • Deep familiarity with visual storytelling forms and techniques for news coverage, including charts, maps, diagrams and 3-D modeling.
  • Ability to identify visual opportunities quickly and produce effective visuals in a breaking news environment.
  • Experience with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Figma to create and edit visual stories, drafts and graphics.
  • Ability to learn new software and technologies used to produce, prototype and edit visual content.
Responsibilities
  • Create and publish weekend graphics coverage using visual forms including visual stories, maps, charts, diagrams and other quick-turn graphics.
  • Produce and edit news graphics quickly and iteratively, from simpler quick-turn visual forms to more ambitious story angles.
  • Guide a small team of visual journalists to cover major breaking news on the weekend when necessary.
  • Collaborate with Graphics journalists and journalists from other newsroom desks on breaking news coverage.
  • Identify visual opportunities and execute graphics across a variety of visual formats.
  • Conceive new lines of reporting, execute fast-turn graphics, and produce and edit news graphics on deadline.
  • Perform editing responsibilities for breaking news coverage when working with Graphics staff and journalists from other desks.
  • Report to an editor on the Graphics team.
Desired Qualifications
  • Ability to read and edit HTML, CSS and JavaScript, including frameworks such as Svelte.
  • Familiarity with ai2html, web development and data analysis techniques.
  • Experience working collaboratively and independently.
  • Attention to detail and strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in fast-moving, unpredictable news and production environments.
